Neil started a suggestion for 2009. I thought that it deserved its own thread. So here it is Bob Bob,
I'll talk this through in perhaps more detail on Tuesday when we have the Cambridge minimeet, but be aware I'm starting to think about considering letting the idea of planning an Italian trip cross my mind. I've spoken briefly with SimonJ about it...
Specifically, fifteen year reunion at the Pininfarina factory, see the collection, roof of the Lingotto if possible...
Key points: - one week/ten days max - gentle drive in the country, rather than all out blast (if only because 30mpg at 80 is a quarter the price of 7.5mpg flat out!) - channel tunnel - decent hotels, rather than Formel 1 - stop at/close to (probably) Riems, Dijon on the way down - avoid motorways/tolls if possible - interesting looking passes around Val d'Isere - *possible* then across to the west - Brescia, Lake Garda, North (more passes!) to Austria and thence home via the German motorway system up the Rhine, turn left at Aachen - though that's really a two day trip of itself.
To be on a race track in and of itself does not hugely interest me; I see this as a holiday rather than a cruise and I'd like to get some architecture in (and some retail therapy for she who must be obeyed!). Equally, it's not an all-out blast; it's a grand tour to see the places rather than how fast the cars will go - we already know that. And finally, I'd very much like to do this within the aegis of the FCCUK.
Neil

Neil, I am sure some of the French Coupe club fellows could give us some good ideas for Hotels & stops on the way down through France. Do you remember a top gear programme where the guys went off the motorway in France? It was the scenic route along the N63 if I remember correctly. I look forward to discussing this further with you on Tuesday Neil Bob

Hello,
Depending on when and the particular route you'll follow, I may join (most likely alone or with a friend, not full family...) Well, I'll take a boat to Ancona and drive from there.

Interestingly, I'm possibly looking at a road trip of some sort next year to mark my passing into marital bliss. Someone on the PH Monaro forum was/is also looking at the same suggestion, for the same reasons. My initial plan was more "compact" and involved some intensive driving, but broadly speaking the plan was: - Millau Viaduct - Monaco - Stelvio Pass - A N Other Pass - Autobahn (vMax tests ) - Nurburgring, with more customary stag-related activities in the Pistenklause I was looking at 4-5 days across the early-May Bank Hol next year. About 2200 miles. Coupe or Monaro was the next discussion to have with myself. Neil, you do realise that "turning left at Aachen" means you're knocking on the door of the Ring? You could take photos of the Castle whilst others pay their €20 per lap.....

Ah but imagine how embarrassing to be towed home I had in mind a little later, June probably before the kids are on holiday but with hopefully good weather. I don't expect this to be a cheap trip: two and a half thousand miles, at six miles to the quid, is four hundred plus on fuel; two hundred for the tunnel; maybe a hundred a day for decent hotels/food, assume £1500-£2000 for ten days...

As I mentioned in the brief PM chat with Neil, I'm willing to help out with arrangements for this trip - I think it's a great idea and something I've wanted to do in a Coupe for years. My wife is fully supportive in wanting to come too, though she might give some of the factory tour stuff a miss. Also, I'm not sure whether either she or I would be interested in an 'intensive' driving trip, this is a holiday for both of us after all Neil and Bob, I know you are talking about this later this week, if you decide its a go-er and want some extra help, feel free to let me know Cheers, Simon

I suppose you just have to go to Italy on this trip. Have a look at the Great Dolomite Road If you want help I've got a Coupé contact who lives in the region.

Another suggestion to take on board: try to attend to an Italian meeting. Get in touch with the Piemonte Club if you need more info.

Chances are that will not tie in with SpaItalia then, last year it was end of June.

Was in New York last week with work and it seems that my main project next year will see me having to stick around in the UK between May and August - I've been 'advised' to plan my holidays accordingly.

Hey, I'd love to come along on this, if possible.
Depending on dates, too. I may have to quit half way through, as I've not managed more than 2 weeks off in three years, nobody to do my work when I'm AWOL!
Still, even if it were just four or five days, would love it. Any idea of the route yet?

Yeah... think of it less as a 'route' and more of a series of waypoints. That way, if you want to go fast and I want to go slow, there's no hustling and hassling. Tentative plan is: - Friday 29 May - cross channel
- Saturday 30 May - Meet at Saint-Omer (20 miles south-east of Calais) to start at 1100; drive to Reims (170 miles) (visit racecourse/museum?)
- Sunday 31 May - Reims to Bourg-en-Bresse (260 miles)
- Monday 1 June - Bourg-en-Bress to Annecy via Saint-Jeore, La Vernaz, Morzine, Samoens, Taninges, Cluses, Le Reposoir, Thones (180 miles) - we hit the mountains and several passes.
- Tuesday 2 June - Annecy to Torino via Ugine, Beaufort, Bourg-St-Maurice (possible side-trips!), Val d'Isere... - again, lots of passes to play with in the Parc National up the side of Mont Blanc. There will still be snow there, I think.
- Wednesday onwards - Torino. At the very least, the Pininfarina design museum and the Lingotto test track (with the cars, if I can swing it!)
I'm open to offers here, of course, but I'm wondering about continuing this by heading east past Milan and Monza to Bormio, and thence to Austria via the Stelvio Pass. That would probably be Friday night to stop in Bormio and then Austria on Saturday. You could get back in one up the autobahns from Bormio but I'd recommend a stop somewhere along the way. I've tried to keep the distances down below three hundred miles a day to give time for sightseeing, retail opportunities, arguing about which we we should have gone instead etc, and I've tried to arrange it for toll-free roads too I have not yet investigated hotels and such. I'm trying to work out how to put that google directions into a map we can all see - if anyone knows, I'd love to... Neil

I'd love to come along for some of this, but it depends on a few changes at work - people leaving and whether they get replaced or not.
If not, there's not a cat in hell's chance of me getting the time off, but I'm definitely interested.
Thanks, Philip

I *might* be up for this. Had a great time at Spa Italia last summer, and now it looks like Spa '09 could fit in perfectly at the end of this trip. Depends a bit on cash flow and whether I can get the time off work, but please put me + 1 down as "maybes".

I have received some conact from Luca in Italy Hi Bob,
Yesterday during a pizza, we (Club Del Coupe Fiat Piemonte organizers) meet 2 moto clubs 'Lady Ducati DOC Torino' (i've also a Duc 916) and 'Gatti Neri', to organize a meeting next year with Club Coupe Fiat Piemonte.
I saw you thought to came in italy in may; if you arrive in turin on friday, we can organize something in your honour in the weekend with the 2 moto's. If you arrive here in turin not in the week end, for us is a big problem because all we're on work.

Austria's good I'll look up which roads I took, but I drove north of Switzerland from the western side of Germany, across a mountain pass and got on to the motorway ( A13 ?)west of Innsbruck. Then up the mountain road to Seefeld via Mosern. Went back to the valley floor motorway ( A13 ?), bypassing Innsbruck, and headed to Kitzbuhel. That road was getting some major roadworks at the time 18 months ago, but it should be fine now.

The Italian guys have adjusted their plans for their Turin meet to fit with our proposed Euro Trip. Having missed out on the 2004 Turin meet I would hate to miss out on another and think we should ensure that we are in Turin for the weekend 6th/7th June.
How about going through Germany, then into Austria before dropping down into Italy and Milan? We could then arrive in Turin for the weekend.
After Turin we could make our way back up through France, with some of us hanging about for the Spa Italia event.

Neil, Do we now have a route fixed? Once we have the route fixed with waypoints and dates added we could then fill in some Hotels. I am sure there will be a few French, German, Italian and Austrian fellows who would be able to help us too

@ barnacle: why don't take the Monday off from work as well? Annecy -> Turin = 300km 6 hrs. [Annecy - La Clusaz - Bourg st. Maurice - Col de l'Iseran - Col du Mt. Cenis - Susa - Turin] Another suggestion is to drive on friday from Calais to Turin on motorway only (660 miles/09.43 hrs) as the first stage of your Euro Tour.

Col du Mont Cenis was quite something when I went over it in the 70s.
16VT and X1/9 1500
We must all do our part for the planet. I unplugged a row of electric cars that nobody was using.

3 pages in and I've only just read this!
Is there room for two more?
Hubby and I would be very interested in coming along too.

Any thoughts about the route yet folks.I was reading baby cash posts on spaitalia.I would like to do both and sort out some camping at spa as his hotel prices are a bit steep for me as i want to stay at spa at least 2 nights. For the euro tour i want to try and mix camping and hotels if possible.I am flexible though about that. Also if you want any help with bookings etc here in france i am happy to help out. Cheers Joe I have sent baby cash a pm about camping at spa.His mate is looking into it,and will contact me later.

Camping and some hotels for me,as i will have been on tour maybe longer than most due to where i live. When i know what route we are takeing i can check out the camping at whatever places we plan to stop at.It may be that as we will be ending up in Spa on the second weekend,i may want to RV with you all part way down to Italy,ie Germany. The sooner the route is fixed the better the prices will be for hotels.
