My Coupe written off :(

My Coupe written off :( - 18/02/2016 15:33

Many guys on here will not know this. But about 1.5 years (Maybe 2,maybe less? I can't really remember) ago I bought a 20V N/A for my Dad as a surprise present. It was a low owner, 53,000 mile example, that just needed a touch of looking after and cleaning up.

Immediately after buying, I asked Joe to change the cam belt, give it a full service and do lots of other bits and bobs. Probably another grand on the buying price ... Actually loads of bots and bobs. I put in an as new condition original dash, cleaned it all up (it was pretty grotty - but very solid and as I said only had 53,000 miles!)

Dropped it off at my parents house and said "this is yours Dad". Anyway, to cut a long story short, my father had issues getting insured in it and my step son needed some new wheels - So I sold it to him for a very, very cheap price.

Today, at 61,000 miles, it got side swiped whilst he was in traffic. The van, then proceeded to disappear into the distance! [cloud9] ass hole.

James is okay, but the car ....... is done!

After buying

Good night little 20V N/A.

We'll see what the insurance company decides it is worth now.....

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 18/02/2016 15:49

Fer fekk sake!! Sorry to see that. Glad he is OK.

Rear quarter looks the worst bit, but the cost of paint and straightening will take it out of the repairable league as you say.

One of the reasons I have a dashcam now. Not a failsafe, but might just help in some circumstances.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 18/02/2016 15:58

Yeah, it had some lacquer peel on the roof also, so the spray costs would mount up along with repairing the panels. But, we'll see what the insurance say.

When I sold it cheap to James I told him that he could never sell it and if he did, he could only sell it to me ..... Oh well frown

Another good example disappears!! Our coupes are dropping like flies!

When things like this happen to myself and my mates, we always look on the positive side by saying "it should T-cut out". Anyway hope you manage to keep it on the road.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 18/02/2016 20:04

When the other halfs N/A was written off some years ago, (similar damage to yours) we got a £1400 payout and bought it back off the insurance company for less than £100.

Don't think all companies do this but LV did at the time. Worth asking?

The question is ready to be asked. I really don't want this scrapped. See what occurs.....

Cheers guys. The really sad thing is that James, my step son (who has been around coupes for many many years obviously) had just properly caught the bug for them. He absolutely loved it!

It'll be interesting to see what the Insurance offer.

C'mon, Phil - you *know* how much you like polishing those little paintwork imperfections out smile

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 08:48

Would be interesting to see just how much you could mop out from that lot Neil! Probably a lot!

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 12:03

Surely a little blue pill will sort it out Phil.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 12:07

If it saves money Pete...... What a lot of advert for a few seconds seeing the car!!
Posted By: lost55

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 13:00

It's not good, but the sills and pillars seem ok.
So it should be repairable, just maybe not economic to do so. Depends on how you look at these things.
Can't believe that someone would do that and not stop though.
Hope it all works out for the best.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 13:04

What a bummer.

Looks like a nice NA to me. Personally, I would use the damage as a reason to get the other paintwork issues done... but as you say it's all money.

Hope the insurance comes up trumps.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 15:51

You'd have thought it difficult to disguise all that paint (and damage) on the van in question. No details I suppose.....
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 16:52

That’s a crappy piece of luck, sorry to hear it Patch.

To be honest though, mine looks nearly as bad after being sideswiped while parked up outside my house. No idea who did it, or when it happened (only noticed the next time I used the car). I know I can’t afford the body repairs. I’ve just left it like that. I’m not precious about the car and it still drives beautifully.

Apparently, hit James, then drove off, James gave chase once he had recovered from what had just happened I suppose, but never caught up....

I understand what you are saying poprock, but I simply cannot drive around in a car like this. I find it hard driving them when I know there is some bird poop on it .... hahahaha You can imagine the rest laugh

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 19/02/2016 19:15

Sorry to hear this Patch but there is a lesson in this story.... If it was a turbo version he would have caught the van!

Surely it just gives you reason to buy another one.... How many have passed through your possession now?

Yeah probably, I polished loads at Joes. I think I dod a few panels on yours just before you came to pick her up on one occasion.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 20/02/2016 11:45

Keep physical possession of the car until you have agreed a deal with the insurers.

Unless you have salvage rights agreed as part of your policy you may find the insurers reluctant to allow you to get access to your own car if they, or a repairer, have custody of it.

Parts can also mysteriously go missing at the same time.

So sorry to hear this, what a bastard to drive off. I do hope you will be able to save it.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 20/02/2016 20:36

When mine was rear ended it was put on Cat D.
I had no intention of letting them have the car, they let me keep at no charge.
Turns out they charge £120 to take the car away.
Also got £1200 for the car being written off.
Did a load of mechanical work and bought a plus interior with the money.
Needs a boot lid, rear bumper and in dire need of a respray.
Anyway it's tucked away in my garage for now, comes out to blow the cobwebs away from time to time.

Hey Phil, I lived in Preston for 4 years. Walton Le Dale / Higher Walton and Bamber Bridge were my stomping ground. I used to work around Blackpool and Lancaster.

Hope things pan out ok.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 20/02/2016 21:48

Yeah, I lived there for about 9 years. Was a lecturer at Mysercough College for 5, lived in Bilsborrow and then Thornton Cleveleys. We have recently moved back to Thornton Cleveleys smile I like it up there! Originally from Londinium

The Mrs and me moved up there for work when we first got "proper" jobs. She worked in Burnley, then Blackburn. I eventually got a job in Preston for the Environment Agency working in pollution control on the rivers. Loved it. My patch was the River Wyre and Lune. So from Blackpool all the way up to Tebay on the M6 and into the Yorkshire Dales national park !

Thornton Cleveleys was in my patch, and I used to visit the old Hillhouse ICI plant and the big landfill site.

Good times. Back in Wales now. Good times, but different.

I must say, I've always liked the people in Lancashire. They're a friendly bunch.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 05/03/2016 06:20

So, to conclude this matter...

Offered £900 or £450 if we keep the car. (James had 300 excess). He had a discussion with them about this offer after I sent him a message telling him what to say; but they would no budge - apart from saying £500 if we keep the car.

Interestingly, in his insurance, it is written that the insurer must keep the car.

James (being the young man his is) has now decided that he wants to start a little business and wants to put the £900.00 into that. He has other transport. And he wants to sell his rare racing FZR motorbike also.

I am not prepared to lose out as I would saving the car,it's more effective to look in the sale threads and wait for a decent 20V to appear. So the £900.00 will be taken, James will take the 20VT wheels off the car and put back the 15" 20V wheels and I will have the 20VT wheels.

Another one, bites the dust.

Not what I had hoped, but this is how it is.

Re: My Coupe written off :( - 05/03/2016 08:28

Hold out don't accept till you get the third offer

The insurance will make you wait but they want the risk cleared from the books

Get adverts of eBay show the money you have spent and ask the
Insurance company to replace a like for like car.

A little patience is all that's required
