Hybrid gearbox - 07/07/2012 17:26

Does anyone know what would be involved in fitting a late gearbox into a 16VT? I am thinking about a 16VT/156 6 speed hybrid. A friend had done a 20VT/156 6 speed hybrid which was pretty simple but that was a late gearbox.

You can fit a 20vt 6 speed box to the 16vt engine, but there is a lot of work involved. I tried it a few years ago and gave up due to what was involved. If you want more details, let me know and I'll post them up.

That would be great, thanks.

From what I can remember, you need to do the following :

You need to grind down the casing that mounts to the engine, to clear the plate for the water jacket

You need to grind down the top of the starter motor to make it clear the inside of the gearbox

You need to make a custom gearbox mount, as the 20vt one is to short, as you can see, I moved my engine mount over

You will need the later gear linkage
You would need 20vt driveshafts
No idea on the half shaft as I never tried it, but the 16vt kind of fits, but doesn't mount flush on the bracket on the back of the engine.

There maybe other stuff, but I can't remember laugh

Thanks Begbie

I was not thinking about fitting the whole gearbox as I could never get a 20VT 6 speed in Aus. But a can get a 156 V6 6 speed gearbox. My idea would be to use the Coupe bell housing and assemble the 6 speed onto that. This does work with a late 20VT bell housing. I dont know about the 16VT but knowing Fiat gearboxes, I think it is probable.

If this were to work, I think the 16VT drive shafts would fit. I dont know about the gearbox mount. The cables would need to be changed for sure.
