Those of Old

Those of Old - 23/10/2013 12:12

Thought it would be interesting to see what people are up to now they left Coupe ownership, ie what they are driving now.

Probably make the current forum users laugh but then it was a 'head turner' if you fitted a new dump valve, interior extra, SuperSprint exhaust or a chip - then there was next to nothing on the market to fit to the Coupe crazy

My memory is crap but here are a few names:

DaveG - seen he is still on the forum
Nigel - need I say anymore laugh used to turn up at the dyno meets with his Ferrari
Beggers - I know 'Busby' is still around tongue with the famous 'Brick'
Taz
DoctorFrag
GrahamL
Panik
sa-20v
Sarah
SpunkyM
Big Lad
James - one of the orignals
Brinks
Burnsy
reblemc
sandys
scooby/Bobblingoton (Canada) who got Scooby's plus?
Geoff H
ChrisPR
JohnS - first to start really thinking out of the box for modifications
Bigfella
m[censored]t crazy

ohh nearly forgot some old geezer by the name of Kayjey - not sure what he did but something to do with this forum laugh

Only a half dozen or so of those names are still active (as far as I'm aware). Many of us haven't owned a Coupé for years. Doesn't stop me wanting one though...

Re: Those of Old - 23/10/2013 12:21

Interesting when you look back at what was being done in those days but the meets were a blast - cant remember the bigest meet but I think there was 50+ coupes.

Even the cambelt change was a hot discussion as at that time on Fiat would do it and it was a complete engine out job !!

Oviously there a a lot more 'oldies' that are still on here, like yourself, PaulS etc

Incidentally, Hanny, you probably ought to know that this is now a bicycle forum. Just so you don't make any mistakes and talk about cars or anything...

Re: Those of Old - 23/10/2013 12:57

Some of us are still here. I still own the coupe, even if it's just gathering dust and generally being a PITA occupying valuable garage space! I guess what I drive now might be seen as some kind of spiritual successor, a 3.0tdi Quattro A5 Coupe. So, still in a coupe, still with a great 3rd gear but this one doesn't rattle and bits don't fall off (oh, and it handles too wink ).

Still can't quite bring myself to get rid of the dust monster though.

Re: Those of Old - 23/10/2013 12:59

Brick is long gone mate. About 8 years ago, if not more. I actually do own a coupe now tongue
Taz is still about with his plus.
GrahamL has made a bit of an appearance recently on the forum.
Sa-20v is over on pistonheads now.
ChrisPR is still about, he posted this week about his wipers being stuck on
DoctorFrag is smoking about in an Alfa 166 I think

Crap - too many posts, too quickly:

@MrB - great to chat again - I know what you mean about the Coupe - I should of kept mine.

@Beggers - I have been watching you mate - knew you had moved over to a coupe - but me thinks you still deep down want to go back to the Brick - just to wind up the coupes as you over took them!!

@ AndrewR - payback is a bitch...lol how do

Re: Those of Old - 23/10/2013 15:21

Still here and back in another 20vt, although as 2nd car now.

Was considering an Alfa GTV V6 or Spider but got nowhere with that so settled on another 20vt and even that wasn't easy to find.

Had my first coupe from '99 to '05 and seeing the prices as low as they are now I thought "it's now or never" for another coupe, so got another steel grey 20vt earlier this year.

It only cost £700 so as you can imagine it needed a fair bit of work, the intention being to fix it up for the summer. That was exactly 8 months ago and I've only just "finished" it up this week after a looong list of work, mostly cosmetic and including a complete re-spray.

Total cost now over £3K (at least I just stopped counting at 3K, haha!), so it would have made more sense to wait for a good one at £2-3K but of course these things never work out as you intend. smile

Looking forward to driving it next summer as it spent most of this summer in my garage in bits, so it's only covered about 600 miles since I've owned it.

Good to see you jump in every now and again Hanny! smile In a 20vt Plus again myself. What are you driving selling out of your boot these days?

Re: Those of Old - 24/10/2013 05:02

Hi Kayjey, Im only only selling dodgy 20vt pluses that are left hand drive to unsuspecting customers in Europe tongue

So you have also gone full circle and gone back to Coupe ownership
Posted By: Nigel

Re: Those of Old - 24/10/2013 06:40

Hi Hanny - good to hear from you again. I fondly remember those early dyno-day meets - I remember being chuffed that my near standard 20vt gave 240bhp. I remember thinking that FrogtheDog's Coupe must be a complete animal with over 280bhp. I remember thinking that the L&M LE was an amazing feat of engineering (and expenditure)

The Prancing Donkey is long gone, but my current Coupe is far quicker

Go on - you know you want to get back in a Coupe and of course I have the perfect car for you.... wink

Re: Those of Old - 24/10/2013 08:20

Great to hear from you Hanny. I've long since sold my green machine and now driving around in a family friendly Mazda 6 sport. Still plan on a coupe again one day laugh Hope you are going to stay hanging around here a bit more.

Hi Hanny. good to hear from you. I still pop up here once in a while wink After that git of a red van took out my plus frown I turn to Alfa's but now in a 120d BMW, boring car but handles well. Looking at the Alfa GT Blackline on Autotrader is I type wink

Hi Nigel - I pop in and have a looksee now and then and your right, it all makes interesting reading when you compare what is being done now compared to those early days - not to mention how much cheaper the parts are - I think we were talking 4 figures just to get above 250bhp shocked in those days.

I remember one of your friends turning up with a certain 'worded' number plate that made us all laugh but imagine that the police would not think it so funny!

I did look at that add - if the timing had been right that would of been the ideal coupe for me - but alas I have to behave now especially that we have just got two bulldog puppies
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Those of Old - 24/10/2013 10:24

@ Turbo - my traveling around is starting to settle down abit - Australia, Spain and now Denmark - I have always had good memories from this forum and to be honest other forums just dont seem to have the same apeal or managed as well.

@ adder - I think the price of the coupes is such that its hard to ignore but problem is that the cost will still be there as the typical Coupe owner wants it ALL and the car to be perfect!

LOL ... they didn't - he got pulled for it and had to change it - for those that don't remember, it was FPU 55Y and on a bright yellow F355 - his assertion that he liked cats didn't help the roadside discussion with Plod

Re: Those of Old - 24/10/2013 13:55

Blimey – just trawling through the old posts:

[list]
[*] Barbz sayinjg farewell
[*]AndrewR very funny post regarding the old forum ‘Coupe V’s….’ -
Quote:
"I was out [today/yesterday/recently/on parole] and saw a [Saxo VTS/Evo/Impreza/Audi/Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo/Saturn V rocket] [in front of me/come up behind me/parked].

I dropped [it to 2nd/it to 3rd/it to 4th/my sandwich] and gave it some welly and saw him [vanish behind me/vanish miles behind me/drop a car length behind me/scratch his arse and change CD].

I know he was trying because [he looked like the sort that would/he said so later, in court/he'd seen his wife in my car/if he wasn't then this story would be pathetic] but [he couldn't keep up/could keep up, but couldn't get past/overtook me easily but looked slightly surprised that I was going so fast ... or maybe was burping or something].

When I turned off he [gave me a friendly wave/made a note of my reg to find me later/pulled me over and gave me a summons/had already been home for 45 minutes/wondered what the **** that had all been about].

Anyway it was a great race and it turns out that my penis isn't tiny after all".

Job's a good 'un.

Was also tring to find some from the early days that show how hard it was to get more than 250bhp with out loads of cash - compared to now where its nearly double ooo

Re: Those of Old - 07/11/2013 07:08

Hello people of old! I do still exist too! Even though my coupe is long gone I still have a garage full of parts for memories smile

Maybe we should have an ex-coupe meet up and see who has the most embarrassing car now! I never lived out my dream to own a Datsun Cherry but maybe I'd make an effort to source one laugh

I wonder what the turning point was for those of us who are no longer in coupe ownership and where the experience wasn't enough to keep the car any longer? Perhaps we could all learn from those long sufferers on Hanny's list who still have one or those who've 'returned to the fold' like Graham.
In fact Graham might not know, but it was some of his posts around tinkering with his coupe that in part led me to buy mine in the first place (and the rest was I had about a week to find a car before I had to return my company car!)

Anyway, good to see you're all still around.

Cheers

Re: Those of Old - 07/11/2013 12:19

To be honest, it's the only car I've ever regretted selling. Unfortunately, the gearbox which, I think, had prior to my ownership been replaced by one from a Laurel, wasn't up to the job and had taken to jumping out of gear... I couldn't afford to replace it, so it had to go.

Still a hundred and fifty around, it seems, and increasing numbers in the last few years.

I still exist too, y'know cry

(although I do still have a Coupe as well, y'know! And actually MrsC wants her own one now rolleyes )

Saw some names appearing as I skimmed through the post. Hurstymofo is married with a nipper now, last I heard he was Mondeo Man. SA-20V is on PH and slightly less, erm, alternative these days, it would appear. Civic Legend apparently travels the world living temporarily in whatever is the world's richest country at that moment!

Anyway, you're only a REAL oldie if you were a signed-up member of the previous incarnation of the forum, before the hosting company went south! I still remember prowling a street in the @rse-end of New Cross on my own in the dark, drawing myself up to my full height and breadth and banging on a door and demanding our tape backups! Hope is not the CSL version - as you know its a typical BMW phrase 'Cant Signal Left' laugh

Thing is that I have changed my cars a few times and regardless on the make the one thing that has always been missed is a decent forum to go with the mark - this forum has a lot of good memories and I think that testament to that is that there are still some of the old 'players' around regardless that they have sold their coupe........says it all really

Funny you should post that. I found a vid from the first meet we went to this weekend. It is a fishy Dave one with all the cars driving up the motorway, and the evening meal with many of the old faces.....
If i could shrink it I would post it (i only have it in hd)
