Evening all I know this has been covered quite alot but thought would just seek some opinions.... My x reg 20v turbo returning around 23mpg... That's a 30 mile commute, half A road and motorway and half stop and start but NEVER thrashed, sad I know! Reason I ask is temp gauge...for first 8 miles of commute lovely open flowing roads but the gauge doesn't even move. Once idling hovers around 60 ish. If left stood rises eventually to 90 ish, once driving again and moving it drops back towards 60. I hear constantly on here about dodgy thermostats causing bad mpg, does this sound like the case here or just standard coupe idiosyncrasy?! Thanks

temp gauge seems ok, up to 90 if in traffic, 60 otherwise. Unsure what mileage you should get from a 20v though, aint got one ! [ yet ]

Mpg seems very low bearing in mind I never drive it as they should be driven simply because of the current mpg. I was considering a fc mapping, but if themo is no good then no real point. Apart from that I'm well happy, been off the road for over two years, had full service etc and running lovely. Maybe its just a thirsty coup!!

Not much below average but low mph could be a lot of things thermostat as you say , spark plugs , a good service , have you taken the plugs out and checked the colour of them ?

As above ^^ - change the thermostat. Sounds exactly like my n/a when I bought it. It's a different car now it's been changed. Also, have you changed the CHOD - coolant hose of death? This connects onto the back of the 'stat then runs around the back of the engine - another common failure point but can be terminal to the engine if it fails and you lose your coolant. Mozza has his fail after the garage changed his thermostat - have you seen his post ? And then get it to FC performance

Thanks I get 22/23 mpg driving around town mostly, sometimes under in the winter. That works out to about 5 miles per litre. On a smooth run I get 7+ mpl which equates to about 32/33 mpg. From your description of the route it does sound low and as said a properly working stat will help fuel economy.

Had exactly the same temp reading myself and after changing the thermostat the gauge now sits around 78 degrees and of course goes up in traffic. I do a 36 mile commute but with a heavy foot, and average 23 to 24 mpg. If I drive like a nun I get 30 mpg. I reckon your mpg is about right due to the stop start side of things.

My usual mantra: If you change the thermostat, change the CHOD at the same time. Issues usually occur if not!
