Why do we fit subs in a box? I'm soon going to be doing my install and I would like to put them behind the rear panels but I was told that the sub needs a box.

FYI The set up that I was going for is

1x Alpine CDA 9855r/9853r (head unit)
1x Alpine MRV F345 (Speaker Amp)
4x Alpine SPR 17ls (Speaker)

if no box required (and space allowes)
1x Alpine MRD M1005 (Sub amp)
1x Alpine SWX 1242d (Sub)

if I need a box
1x Alpine MRD M605 (Sub amp)
1x Alpine SWR 1542d Sub)

Has to have air to move. A sub is like a drum trust me sounds better in a box. lift a sub out of a box when its on and it will go from solid bass to nasty tinny. You can however buy free air moving subs that dont need a box... if you dont use one of these for this purpose then your sub will rip itself apart as it needs a set volume of air to move. You could probably get away with a non box type sub as the coupe boot is enclosed...

What size of sub u goin for ??

If I can rember 12" sub needs somit like 33.3/4" space to get best sound results but --> with the boot being more or less enclosed I'm sure this can be modified a little - I know the boot is way small !! was/am thinking about a small 8" tube in the boot, just to giv the Stez a little more ummf (If I rec al correctly having read through the clarion instructions the standard head unit can accomodate a sub) dunno the max size though ! ??

You could always custom build a box to your boot size? The material of a box is critical. For example those perspex boxes look great sound sh*t. The box design and material will alter the sound more than you would ever imagine. For best results put it in a box or use a free air moving sub and sound deaden the boot a little. then you have the option of enclosed or ported sub box. depending what you want.

Bass tubes would be good as there design incorporates the boot as a secondary enclosure but does not depend on it in the same way. Would probably benefit a lot from from sound deadening the boot though. This I think will be my route using a 10" bass tube as you get good bass and still have a boot..

There was a fantastic install on the old Forum where someone had made a custom glassfibre box moulded into the nearside wheel arch - can't remember who it was but there were very good pics.

Also, I believe that you can get a pair of 10" subs in the rear speak space with a bit of juggling? You can certainly get 6x9s in there - I and many others have already done this.

you can fit a 12 inch sub into as little as a 1 and a hlf cubic foot box some even smaler, and design the box to take up as little space as pos also look great but use as good a quality sub as your buget can sqeeze jl audio 12 w3v2 dule voice coil for example, use 3/4 inch mdf glue screw and seal and cover with same colour as origonal take your time and it will rock, but use a propper amp not a micky mouse one quoteing mega wats splattered all over it

Yeah I love it when cheap nasty amps have 3000 amps max written on the box... And then people quote this as what there ICE is actually constantly producing when in fact its more like 50watts RMS.
