Apparently York Raceway is the better choice.
Limited numbers and better organisation.

Im sorry but York is w-a-n-k, its very poor considering how much money you pay(more than most)the track isnt great and being up here in the North suffers from poor weather regularly raining things off.

Shakespeare County Raceway in Stratford Upon Avon is the best 1/4 mile venue in the UK by far, IMO of course.

Someone else said that was good.

I did hear that York surface wasnt brilliant.

Anyways a bit of H2O seperates the men from the boys.
That is if they let you run.

The best 1/4 mile i did was Jimbo's runway day.

Shakespeare County has alot of "old boys" helping run it, and I have it on record from a very good source as being THE track to use.

I live closest to York than any other venue and I would happily endure the longer drive and expense to go to Shakespeare County. Good camping venue too, bbq's and light topping of beers makes for a great weekend, weather is normally very good too.

I was involved in alot of classic mini drag racing at Shakespeare County( dont laugh, there's 1.3 litre turbo mini's that'll do an 11.1 1/4!!) and loved the weekends there.

Jimbo's 1/4 mile & top speed run day was excellent - good memories.

Shakespeare County Raceway sounds promising, pretty close to me so I am happy to go down and have a gander.

Sorry mate only maybe 20% of people on this site have the balls to use their cars, and the ones that went didn't bother posting times or anything. I tried making it a little competitive but alas too many people scared of hurting their cars. I was dissapointed by the poor reaction to a bit of competition tbh.

bit harsh there mate,
not everyone can afford to take the chance of breaking their car, so subjecting to the huge stress of 1/4 mile times isn't for everyone.
Per example, my car is my daily driver, I NEED the car for work, or it costs me over a £100 a week just for transport, then the repair bill on top of that. If I was to seriously damage the car I'd be screwed.

Not sure about the 20% figure, but I partly agree with the comment. However, to chastise owners for not running their car up the dragstrip is rather harsh. There are many stories of blown engines and gearboxes, and an awful lot of them happen on the dragstrip, so people are naturally reticent to take the risk of having to walk to work on Monday after they have killed their car on Sunday

I'm living proof of this - £20 to get in, £25 to sign on, several hours in the queue and my gearbox had exploded before I'd travelled more than two car lengths. A long, slow trip home on a recovery truck, followed by several days off the road and a painful bill for a new differential and bellhousing.

With hugely expensive and inconvenient failures like this, its really not surprising that some owners choose to watch,, rather than take part.

At the end of the day its their car. They pay the bills, they look after it, they may not even enjoy drag racing/trackdays so its their choice.

Drag strips aren't my cup of tea Rosey, track days however are. Much more entertainment throwing the car round some twisties and much more track time than say a 13 sec blast on a overly sticky drag strip that's a car killer!

Get yourself to one next year mate thumb

Should be good for low 13's with a good launch - if not then high 13's

I can totally understand that viewpoint Nigel. I can see why alot of people don't do it.

I think I just find it difficult to adjust to this forum now and again(sorry guys, still love it though) as I was used to building turbomini's and on their forum there was always continued development, and a bit of friendly rivalry.

While I can see Nigels point, I question why some members have these high performance cars if they are not going to use them properly, be it strip or track, if you are constantly scared of using the car in anger or cannot afford it, why have it?

Seriously maybe a 306 dturbo may suit them better?

Just because a car isn't taken on the circuit or the dragstrip doesn't mean its not used in anger. Sure, it's becoming increasingly difficult to use all of a Coupé's potential on the road, but it doesn't mean its going to be treated gently. My own car is used very hard on the road, in all weathers and I know that many other modded Coupe owners are the same.

A 400bhp Coupe is modestly decent on a dragstrip. Its pretty handy on a circuit. However, its utterly devastating on the road, which is where 99.9% of Coupes spend 99% of their time. You don't have to be travelling at warp factor 9 (although its occasionally unavoidable wink ) - a powerful Coupe can be a lot of fun at legal speeds

The main factor is that the owners that stay away from the track and the dragstrip are probably the ones that don't kill their cars - the appeal is obvious

Davie - I also understand your viewpoint - I was SO exasperated this year when I was the only Coupe to run at Ten of the Best, despite "100% certain" promises from several members during the preceding 12 months

At the end of the day, some members are prepared to risk their cars, but most are not in a position to bear the cost of an avoidable breakage

I'd guess that there are a huge amount of performance car owners who have never even sniffed near a track/drag event.

At an AutoItalia event at Santa Pod a few years ago there were hundreds of rare exotica. I seem to remember seeing only 2 ferraris go down the strip, and 1 of them (a 360 or maybe a 355) managed to break its gearbox and get towed home.

I always get amazed by the sheer amount of cars which are drag/track special car, rarely used, dragged out once a year to go to events. A lot of people simply cannot afford that luxury so most of us make a compromise. The coupe may be an affordable step into performance motoring but it doesn't mean things are cheap to fix.

It was a 360CS. I've got the video somewhere

load it up..
that will be an up setting video to watch..

regarding the Pod..

i really wanted to run mine, but a dodge drive shaft and no time to fix it left me buggered and i just could not run the car, looking at the damaged done to other cars.. the pod would of chewed mine up and destroyed the drive shaft as well as the gearbox.

just not worth the risk at the point in time.

im sure the next event will be better!

A 306d Turbo is not going to be the same fun or adrenalin as a powerful coupe on the road is it?

Now in the 400+ bhp club!

Kudos to those of you that do track/drag them, I'll see you on track next year smile Road driving has significant limits no matter how enthusiastic you may be, track driving is all about finding both the cars limit and the drivers limit.

And those who don't, I understand reasons why to. My 20vt is not my daily drive so I can afford that chance. Also, the coop is a fairly inexpensive way into good performance track days.

What I don't understand are those owners who won't go near a track as they are too scared?! And before you all deny it, I've heard that so many times smile

Yellow...

I dont think scared is the right word to use.

I had never driven my car on a track before. Ive always wanted to do it, but didn’t feel comfortable just turning up one day and going straight in at the deep end.

At the agm I plucked up the courage to give curborough ago! I loved every min of it!
Now im looking forward to giving SPA a go. I think the issue is people who have never been on a track before may feel a bit worried to just turn up on a track day and go straight in at the deep end.

Maybe if some of the track gurus on here wanted to organise an amateur track day where they could go out as passengers in peoples cars and help them out, or take them out in their cars and teach them the ropes?

I want to do a few smaller tracks next year before spa..

As for drag racing... it just doesnt really appeal to me - I would even go as far as saying a tad boring laugh But its everyone to their own smile

A track day for us wimps would be great... I would be scared of stacking my Coupe and finding that a broken wing leads to an insurance write-off shocked . I confess to hooning around a few of the Kentish country lanes and getting VERY close to the speed limit on the M20 when it is quiet laugh .

I was planning to have a go at Curborough, but CHOD meant I could not even get my Scottie to the AGM - god knows what might have happened if that had occurred whilst hacking round the track ooo .

I still regard the Coupe as a wonderful GT; she is NOT a racing car in anything resembling standard form, and is certainly not a dragster. I admire the cojones of anyone risking their beloved Coupe on the 1/4 mile, but they do need deeper wallets than I have rolleyes . I love my Coupe(s) too much to subject them to that abuse - too many get towed home. Mine got towed home from my son's school shocked , and I was NOT doing 140mph!

Like watching though!
