Now this is a *project*! Volunteers building a squadron of Spitfires.....

Unfortunately Mrs Stan has already declined my request that we immediately relocate to Oxfordshire frown

It would be an ideal opportunity for some people on here, even if the plane will be slower than some of the alleged speeds achieved by certain coupés! laugh

Seems a shame to make them only 90% scale; why go to all that trouble and come up short confused

^^^ - my thoughts exactly - seems daft not to build a full-size replica.

It also makes me think that they're not going to power it with a Merlin, which would remove the single greatest aspect of a Spitfire - the noise

Possibly to reduce weight, the genuine spitfire had the merlin engine in the nose which was a considerably weighty lump, you will never get engines that heavy these days so unless you're going to pack a ton of lead in the nose just down scale it slightly and keep the centre of gravity where it should be. That way you keep the original lines of the spitfire and you don't have the high wing loading most war birds had.

I can believe that - Mrs stan is always moaning and groaning about it.

Well, I was thinking about setting up a Scottish club to build ME109Bs and then we could re-run the BoB and equalise the score this time......revenge for the constant droning on and on and on and on about 1966 tongue

Sounds like a fun project, although it will no doubt run into millions and millions of pounds to acheive.

I used to have to deliver/collect goods (normally wings) from a company based at Duxford while I was trucking, who restored/repaired/manufactured classic aircraft, and who had several Spitfires on the go -

Had a nose round this one, and although I had a degree of the school boy grin just being close to it, what struck me most about it, was just how flimsy and basic it really was.

Built quickly, with wafer thin materials, and to really no high standard.

The plane in the picture was apparently owned by a group of companies who used it as some kind of PR toy, and was reportedly worth around £2 million.

Crazy as there is probably only about £100 of metal in it shocked
