Given the choice of 2 cars what would you choose
A,Alfa gt 1.9 diesel or
B,BMW e46 330 ci

two completely different cars..depends on situation..

Loads of miles or fun car?

Errrr in not to sure lol I guess handling fun factor, don't do that many miles hence a 330 I know there chalk and cheese but they are the top 2 for my coupe replacement

330 for me..for the cost of diesal you will only mainly gain when mile munching..comfort and nice place to be 330 ci..also sounds great when flooring it.

Looks come into it aswell can't go from a coupe to an ugly duckling lol ps the 330 ci would be a sport,black sports leather seats silver dash and maybe if I can find one in Imola red saw one 2 weeks ago and it looks very nice

i went from a bravo 20vt, to a 2003 330ci sport (manual), bmw's gone and i now have my bravo again (sold the bravo but managed to get it back! :))

the bmw is such a fantastic car, and it fantastic to drive, but i found it too slow, it had good power but i done exhaust, carbon air intake, re-map, still not enough, so sold up before i spent too much.

id imagine a re-mapped bmw e46 330cd would be good, gotta be manual though.

Still don't think a 330 is a slouch might not feel quick but I'm after abit more refinement after the fiat I'd agree with the manual seems an auto packs in between 100k-150k and that costs around £1200 to fix its a very common fault with the auto plus mpg drops by 7 to the gallon

And on a run if driven appropriately can consume very well for what it is

I know been searching on the net for mpg figures av mpg for a 320ci is 31.7 and a 330 is 31 mpg (BMW figures) and owners seem to go along with this the 2l is an older engine the m54 330 is a peach lol

Unfortunately a 3.2 v6 doesn't come into my budget yet but the jtd does

if you definitely want one of those cars, standard vs standard the bmw is probably better.

but would you be getting the alfa re-mapped?

if so, and id definitely recommend it! id go with the alfa, bet it will be quite nice to drive once mapped and good fuel economey.

In that case go for the Beemer.

My dad has a 330ci Auto, it is a great car and would be even better with a manual box.
As far as autos go it is pretty good though.

Average MPG is 26 in normal driving 32 on a run.

If you do go for an Auto, getting the oil changed in the gearbox (by someone who knows what they are doing) will extend the life of the box.

V6s are less that £5k, how much were you thinking of spending on the diesel?

When I had a look last the V6's were cheaper than the Diesels as well, with the runt of the litter the JTS being the cheapest.

If you get a V6 I would budget for a Q2 though.

A friend just got rid of his 2006 gt v6 on ebay for £3.5k

Nearly £500 a year tax though..

If you find one registered before 23rd March 2006, the tax would be £260. So anything up to a 55 plate to be 'safe'.

In all honesty the BMW would be the safer bet, a mate has a 51 plate 330i M Sport and it is very refined (compared to my Coupe), and makes a nice noise with it's 6 cylinders. It's had a few small issues, as any car which is 10 years old would, but nothing expensive. That said the Alfa is better looking and, from memory, has the last of the true Alfa V6's under the bonnet.
