In a bubble that fragile, I'd be a bit weather dependent, too...

What's his target altitude?

Actually scratch that, found it - 120,000

120,000ft.

Seems to have a problem with his visor not heating - not sure how he gets down if he can't jump

I still think the guy who could do a rubik's cube blindfolded in 15 seconds feats were more impressive.

Crazy Austrian nutcase, spinning around like that at around 700mph. Thought did cross my mind we were watching his last rights crazy

A shame he didn't break the free fall duration record. How on earth did anyone in 1960 manage to beat this for endurance?

Yes I wondered that but i think I know why.

The chap that jumped in 1960 left his baloon at 102000ft and he freefell duration of 4.30 something but no actual speed was recorded,

Todays jump was 4.07 from 128000ft but becasue his speed was far greater his freefall was shorter.

Of course this is just my theory smile

Spot on, Joe - plus, I think he opened his chute slightly on the early side. Given that his visor was steaming up he possibly couldn't see the altimeter properly, I'd probably have been inclined to have a little airspace to negotiate with.

It seems he won't get the record for the highest manned balloon - you have to be in it when it gets back to the ground, apparently.

So what records were broken today?

My thoughts with him trying again to reaching 761 mph, lead ballast that can be dropped say 2 minutes into the free fall, or try going a little higher, but the height today was only 9000m off of being in space so they're pushing it close to to floating away instead of freefall sick laugh

Copied from the Redbull site.

The speed of sound is affected by temperature: where the air is colder, sound travels more slowly. At about 100,000 feet above sea level, Felix Baumgartner will need to accelerate to about 690 miles per hour to match the speed of sound, known as Mach 1. Then if he continues to accelerate and surpasses the speed of sound, he'll be "supersonic."

So he did break the speed of sound smile

Well done that man or gravity laugh

Understatement of the year Neil!

You have to be in it when it comes down? I can see why that is in the rules but a shame none the less.

Joe - he was only one third of the way to the official space line which is about sixty miles up.

This is truly incredible.

But can someone explain to a complete numpty what happen to terminal velocity (which I thought was about 120mph)?? Something to do with the air up there?

There's no air to speak of at 125000ft so far less resistance.
