4 shots seems quite a lot for an accident! Though as we know next to nothing surrounding the circumstances yet probably a bit soon to make any real accusations. Though 4 shots still seems a lot for an accident.

Any way you look at this, it's an awful tragedy.
MrsC has spent a lot of time with family in parts of South Africa and very nearly got shot by her brother in law when returning late after a night out, as he thought they were burglars.
Her ex's mum was burgled and only just escaped with her life. Burglars know there is a high chance of getting shot, so they will frequently shoot first; same with car-jackings - if you're a desperate, drug addicted, HIV-positive burglar, your perception of the value of human life is probably a bit skewed.
So, it's not an unlikely scenario, but without more information, who knows?
