My B&D workhorse has just given up - it's nothing special, 710W, 3.2A.

I have a battery-operated Bosch but it's small and pretty pathetic tbh. For stamina I think the new one has to be + cable...

I'd like something sturdy without re-mortgaging, any of the pros on here have advice?

Apart from "get a professional in"......

I don't know if you can get a DeWalt but mine's been fantastic over many years.

I know you said corded, but worth looking at deals on the Makita cordless drills esp. if it comes with 2 batteries. I have an early 18v 3ah version that I got 2nd hand for £90. It lasts for ages even under serious load. I only have 1 battery but the charger is really quick (like 20 mins). Screwfix are doing updated drill for £140 plus you get 2 batteries so you'll never be without. Worth thinking about, but you need min. 18v and 3ah.

+1 for the Makita. I bought mine to renovate a house in 2007/8 and it's still going strong. It came with an impact driver body as well as the standard drill-driver, which is bloody brilliant if you need to screw into 200-year-old oak beams!

+2 on Makita.

I bought a 2nd hand one roughly 4 years ago and it's still going strong.

I'd be a +1 for Makita if it weren't that the palm sander I bought recently hadn't failed in under a year (I hadn't even used up the sanding pads I bought with it)

This certainly looks a good one and with the general support for Makita (which I've never used before) on here I'm very tempted even if it is more expensive than I'd originally intended.

Still, you get what you pay for!

I've been happy with the Ryobi cordless drills I have. They often have bundle packs in B&Q. My first set was 2 x drills (normal drill and "right angle" long thin one, ideal for drilling out broken manifold studs on the Coupe wink with 2 NiCd batteries (now dead) charger and a large carry bag, and my second set many years later was another drill + 2 LiIon batteries, charger and another smaller carry bag.

The new batteries are "only" 1.3 Ah but are perfectly OK, anything larger becomes a lot more expensive and a lot larger/heavier too, and I would argue that they're not required unless you do a lot of drilling all the time (dentist?)

We also have a Ryobi cordless hedge trimmer that uses the same batteries, you might want to consider other appliances, eg: circular saw, garden saw, chain saw, lawnmover even, that can use the same batteries.

No need to buy a corded drill to get one with enough power. As others have said, Makita 18v Li-ion, or Bosch professional 18v Li-ion. Both good and will last many years.
