I fitted new discs n pads to the family Scenic two weeks and 500 miles ago. Can't remember which make discs I had but they were Nippon pads, all supplied by my local factors who I've used for ages.
I finished fitting them in the dark and rain. Took the car out and wasn't impressed but it was wet so I thought they would bed in.
Did 250 mile round trip to Legoland on Sunday and thought the brakes to be ok but didn't do any moderate or hard braking so wasn't unduly worried.
Used the car this evening and thought God, they are crap. Emergency stops just didn't happen as they should.
Taking the o/s front wheel off I could see day light between the pad face and the disc on the inner pad, next to the piston.
Got Mrs HH to stamp on the pedal and I could see the piston was trying to straighten the pad up to the disc.
Taking the pad out, it was clear that it wasn't square to the pad back. The back plus friction material was 16mm on the outer edge of the pad, and 14mm on the hub side. You could see that only 50% of both pads areas were being used crazy
The other three pads were fine.
So, it's back to the factors tomorrow.
Anyone else had an issue with new pads?

Many years ago a local factor supplied a set of pads for a Xsara. As I was ready to fit the new pads the friction material fell away from the backing plate as I lifted the pad from the box.

Blimey Szkom. Glad that happened before they made it into the caliper!
The factors swapped the pads for properly made ones with an apology. They whipped out some calipers, measured the friction surface of the lop-sided pad and it was 2mm thinner on the one side.
They did suggest that my poor fitting technique had caused the pad to wear unevenly until I pointed out the thinner section had no wear on it!
Allied Nippon was the make of the pads.
Hope they last now....

The E number on the pad denotes the country of manufacture, for example E1 is Germany, E11 is the UK, etc:

I try and buy brake components from OEMs that I have heard of like ATE, Lucas, etc,. There is not that much difference in price so might as well have something that has a has a track record.

Thanks Neil.
I was losing confidence in the pads as today went on.
I fitted them tonight, and was pleased to see an E11 mark on them.
On the road they were good. As good as the old ones already after just ten miles.
Just thankful I didn't have to do an emergency stop on the motorway when the dodgy ones were fitted.

Glad you are sorted and safe again. Getting any real info on pads is rather difficult. The US requires friction grades to be stamped on the pads so one gets a bit of an idea which band the pad falls in. They are sometimes also included on European stock. An R90 pad, the only pads that seem to be road legal here, are supposed to be within 15% of OE, so there is not really a lot of possible difference. Most is probably the placebo effect of a new purchase and that old discs seem to harden with age reducing friction.

I bought some cheap pads once for an arosa. Can't remember the manufacturer. £11 the pair from carparts4less. They stopped the car fine but rattled because the were slightly too small.
