Anyone else got loads of little moths chomping their way through your carpet? They leave little white cocoons behind as the larvae hatch out. Finding them behind or under furniture and along the edges of the skirting. Patches of carpet are peppered with holes.

I'm in constant John Goodman (in Arachnophobia) mode swatting moths.... evil

Had a few before, but this year is particularly bad.

My dad who is on his own had loads. When my girlfriend and I helped him clean the house we did find big infestations and white cocoons. A good vacume sorts it out. A lot of these problems are cause by modern design furniture which often has no access to be vacuumed under and they breed in the dark. Also leave any spiders in the house....goes against gut instinct.

Ooooohh yes, they're common "here" in Edinburgh too - heaven knows what they're squelching through while we're on holiday frown

Indeed, good housekeeping is the most effective way of deterring them to disturb their would-be lairs.

Not a good flatmate for pianists either shocked When buying a piano it's one of the basic things to check - the green felt washers for example under the keys are one of the attractions. Revealing these by removing the front rail can show neat little collections of eggs the size of a pin-head, bearing the colour of what has been eaten!

They hate the light so keep moving furniture around helps. Same for clothes moths.

I had this a few years back. We ignored it the 1st year, 2nd year it was getting bad but only restricted to the lounge, but by the 3rd year it got completely out of hand and we were overrun. Not quite as bad as alien but the cocoons hanging from the ceiling each morning did give you that creepy feeling and wasn't fun.

In the end we had to hit it hard and I had to gut the lounge completely, including taking all the skirting board off and the power socket plates - they'd got everywhere imaginable. Furniture went, dpm over concrete floor and up behind new skirting to seal in any eggs in pointing, new laminate flooring down (to replace the carpet) and finished it off with several professional smoke bombs (off ebay) released before a weeks holiday as pretty unpleasant stuff. Haven't had much since, but really can get out of hand quickly so be careful.
From something silly and minor that probably came in with the washing it ended up costing me an arm and a leg. With hindsight we may have been able to do it on the household insurance, but didn't consider that at the time.

I don't seem to have much luck and our house seems to be a bit cursed - current issue is rats in the loft & party wall. What fun.
