I'm getting a bit precious about the Coupé these days. I thought of spending up to £1k on a car just for the track. This is probably a pipe dream because I have no space for another car, but what could I get?

I think rear wheel drive is a requirement so thought of a BMW compact with the straight 6.

Ideas?

Yeah, we had an Mx5. It left me a bit cold. I know it's extremely capable on track. I think I want an engine with more than 4 cylinders.

Aural pleasure you see....

I don't think you'll get much BMW for sub 1K.

Renault Sport Clio makes a good cheap track car even as standard. Doesn't check you engine or rear drive requirements but does have bags of lift off overseer.

For me with front wheel drive you can chuck the car about as much as you like and get away with it. Rear drive requires a bit more driver skill.

What about an MG TF only a four pot, but easily in budget at the moment and mid engined fun.

Watched BMW Compacts racing at Castle Combe a week back. The most entertaining race of the day - bar none!

If you can get a 6-pot, go for it!

There's 325 ti on ebay for less than 1k. It need a little work I suspect but they can be had for your budget.

Another idea for you, W30 MR2. A boring 4 pot I know, but the mid engine layout must be worth something.

There is a 20VT track car on eBay just now, but he wants more than £2,000 for it and the engine is out!

Why would rear wheel drive be better?
