The lacquer peel on my speed red vis Coupe seemed to get a lot worse almost overnight. It will be a long time before I can save up £2000 for a respray. So I have been looking at YouTube videos about plastidip. The beauty of it is that if it looks terrible, you can just peel it off. Apparently when peeled off, it takes the bad lacquer layer with it, which could be useful in itself. You can use a layer of special primer first to help the plastidip to stick on a bad surface. It works better on a bad surface than vinyl wrap because you can apply multiple coats, whereas a sheet of vinyl will show up every lump and bump underneath it.
One rattle can of plastidip costs only £12.00 and a tin of primer about £16.00.
I don't think I could possibly make it look any worse than it already does. It will be a matt finish (apparently matt is better than the glossy ones for covering bad lacquer) but I think it could look OK. I will start with the back bumper and see how it looks.
I considered it but went with a vinyl wrap for the roof. It does show the areas where the lacquer had peeled off as you say but I used a carbon firbe look wrap which means it's only when you look closely that you see it. Cost me less than £50 for the roof, A and C pillars.
I did it myself, it isn't fantastic but was my first attempt and two years later is still in place. Took an afternoon to do. This was it at Harewood hillclimb today

Had a good day yesterday, it was only practice day so I didn't push too much but the car seems to have survived the winter OK - was within half a second of my PB despite it being really cold so quite happy with that.
Thanks Annie, the photo probably flatters it as it has a few body issues but on 204k miles now, never garaged and driven pretty hard regularly!!
