For my newly acquired plus wheels that
I’m getting refurbed
I have plumped for
Toyo Proxes as choice for plus size wheels was thin on
The ground
Plus £265 for 4 tyres I think is pretty good

Hopefully they do well
But time will tell

I had new proxies put on my plus because thats what was on it when I bought the car so I didnt think about it much .. they went on in May 2019 .. I did approx 1500 mainly motorway miles between then and the MOT in Sept 2019 when the fronts were flagged as being barely legal .. so personally I cant recommemd them. I am wondering if there's a harder wearing tyre out there does anyone have any advice?

Mainly motorway ?

Were you doing doughnuts in the car park the rest of the time hehe

Yes apparently these are new on the market Proxes
And reviews are good so we will see if they were made for coupes

The new Toyo Proxy TR1's were not carrying the new compound on Coupe sizes Joe-when I checked late last year.

They said this might change this year- the size is a v v low demand size. Hence they were still making them to the original spec.

I've not really found the logical next step for those with plus rims, who want to upgrade their tyre - and not have a dedicated race tyre- the choice is so limited the Toyo's remain on the list.

A 16% improvement wouldn't be sniffed at mind...

Regards

MM

Yes I only found 3 real tyres to choose from
For Plus sizes

The Toyo Proxies
£65/70 a tyre roughly
Hankooks which are on my wifes tipo so I was slightly tempted £85 a tyre

Or Yokohama which was £100 plus

They are getting fitted onto my plus wheels today
Which have just been refurbished and look brand new
Getting them tomorrow so will see how they combine

I likely need to choose the Yokohama's (not sure re quality of Hankooks?) simply in the name of learning.

Are your Toyo's the new uprated compound though?

Think Hankooks are decent tyres probally not suited to what
Is a high performance vehicle though

They say they are new toyo Proxes
Including on the toyo website

TR1 rather than T1R which I think was the older version if I’m not mistaken

There really is a very limited choice in the 225/45-16 size. Almost everything I found on the German sites were either old or not well known:

Nankang 225/45 ZR16 89W Noble Sport NS-20 60.42 €
Nexen 225/45 ZR16 93W N'Fera Primus XL 73.43 €
Nexen 225/45 R16 93W N'Fera SU1 XL RPB 73.80 €
Hankook 225/45 R16 89W Ventus Prime2 K115 96.57 €
Yokohama 225/45 R16 89W Advan-Neova AD08RS 133.86 €
Nankang 225/45 ZR16 89W Sportnex NS-2R XL 139.72 €
Toyo 225/45 ZR16 93W Proxes R 888-R XL 157.13 €
Toyo 225/45 R16 93W Proxes TR1 XL 176.85 €
Yokohama 225/45 R16 93W Advan A052 XL 238.60 €

Hardly any appeal or are way too expensive out here. Personally I would take the Hankooks. A good allround, if not sporty tyre. The later K125 is apparently even better. The choice in the normal size 205/50-16 is still pretty good and I would take something newer and better from there than have any of those I've listed above.

I went for Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in 205/55-16 on mine. Standard springs, no rubbing even when pressing on. At least with only me in the car.

That is definitely a different tread pattern to the previous TR1, will be interested to find out how they perform.

Joe,

Will you get the chance to feed back how they feel on a coupe compared to the older style - if you get the chance to take a car on a drive through your fave "test circuit"?

Looking on with interest!

Bit of feedback about new Toyo Proxies

Can’t compare them to the old ones cause never got to try them

But new ones I fitted last Thursday certainly seem up to the job
And they’ve been getting used in wet weather and where in past I’ve been having to ease off on the power before I head off on the wrong direction (granted tyres at front were getting close to legal limit)
These take all the power you can throw at them and keep heading straight forward

And ride comfort has improved dramatically
Which is saying something since my coop is lowered quite a bit

So after I would say doing about 100 miles I think they fit bit really well and at their price you can’t really beat it

And even though weather has been pretty poor over weekend
I may or may not have felt safe enough to hit 3 figures
Wink wink

Alan

Thanks Alan,

That sounds a lot better then I get from my current tyres and set-up. And good given the current low temperatures - Appreciate the feed back as all information is useful!

What size and how much did you pay per tyre?

Always seem to have too many 20VT's to count......

Size 225 45 16

£265.58 for 4 on eBay
Which works out just over £66 a tyre

And I got them put on my plus wheels for free as I was
Getting then refurbished for a cheap £160 for 4 wheels

Nothing wrong with Hankook, very dependable tyres, wear far better than Yokohama in my experience. Though Nexen another Korean brand seem to be making strides with there tyres now.

The coupe's still in the garage - keen to come out and be given a shake down- but the weather just won't let up and roads around me remain flooded with field wash off.

Just waiting on that orange globe that use to hang in the sky to come back. Then Coupe adventures can re-start.

The sun has got its hat on again- hip hip hip!

So, my coupe has now got two brand new Toyo's on the front (the plan was for a set of 4 all the way around, but the back wheels had about 90% of tread left on the rear and it would simply have been criminal to have swapped them over)

The car was also booked in for a proper old fashioned troubleshooting session to figure out why it constantly pulls to the left, with steering wheel noticeably on the kink to the right. The front nearside was noticeably more worn then the farside, And a few wear marks to show tracking issues. The right was in good order.

The car benefited from 1) Me knowing the owner well and him being receptive to it being a Coupe, 2) being the only car in the shop. So my coupe got an unrushed, slow and methodical tyre change, old weights removed, balanced, check and recheck. Before setting, checking, road testing, re checking, re-road testing and then final tightening.

Outcome - the car now goes straight! Steering wheel is straight! I've not had much chance (thank you covid19) to check much out beyond that. But I figure I can use the coop on my next trip to the shops.

The car does feel better - as it would with new tyres. Less crashy a well with bumps. Which is very welcome as its THE thing in my mind that lets the enjoyment of the car down.

So now I am just waiting for the driving lockdown to be lifted and I will get to test these new tyres out.

Fitted, balanced, and what amounted to 2 hours of tinkering, adjusting and one on one service came to £80 a tyre. Can you find the tyre cheaper on line? Yes. But for the service I got- extremely happy with that.

Maybe I should have swapped the rears over too...

Regards,

MM
