Should the schools go back in September I will need to take my daughter to her 6th form, there is no transport. I'm reluctant to rely on the coupe as a daily driver for what will be a 60 mile trip (there and back twice).
I've been looking at the above, it is of course entirely sensible! The estate version will be great for, er, moving pianos etc. We live in the middle of nowhere at the bottom of a valley that regularly floods and is made impassible virtually every time it snows thus 4wd is essential, and the 250+hp just enough for such a big heavy car! I believe they are quite capable of being tuned.
Anyone had any experience of these? What to look out for/avoid?

Join the UKlegacy.com forum and ask there. They might even know the car.

From personal experience - I had a 2.0 turbo diesel, the cars are great, a lovely drive and very capable, will easily handle what you describe. Just don't buy the diesel, the motor is a pile of junk. The 3.0 however is excellent, many people are put off by the engine capacity, worries about fuel consumption etc. (I think its mid to upper 20's mpg) and the road tax cost, so they don't go for big money. They wear well even though getting on a bit now, If I was ever to buy one again I would buy the 3.0.

You can map them, again visit the forum for advice, they're not like the Impreza lot...

For snow, you really just need good winter tyres but don’t let me stop you buying a Scooby. I bought an Outback when we moved to the Highlands but AWD really wasn’t especially useful. After that, I had a series of E Classes, the RWD poster child for poor snow performance and, on standard tyres, it wouldn’t shift off the drive. With some Michelin Alpins, it would go through anything that didn’t beach it - stunning transformation. These days, now I’m in the West Country, I have Cross Climates for winter.

As for Subaru, what I did find with my Outback was that service was great but parts prices were eye-watering and they are rare enough not to have a wealth of aftermarket parts. I’ve had a couple of Imprezas and that situation is much better. I think the Outback is just a jacked-up Legacy.

Clanger is right though - avoid the diesel like the plague. 60 country miles a day on a Subaru 3 litre will make the bank manager wince though...

As a fellow West-Country resident, I wholeheartedly endorse the idea of an unnecessarily powerful estate car with the potential to break your heart and bank balance. I would add that - if 4 wheel drive proves non-essential - Richard's suggestion of a Merc could be a good alternative. Or a V8 BMW, obviously...

There's a 645 4.4 coupe on sale near here for around £2,600, been off the road for a while and has leaky power steering, common BMW issue I believe, have been thinking about it! Of course no 4wd and it'll struggle with the piano.

Funny you should mention the power steering. Mine revealed a steering fluid habit that Oliver Reed would have found embarrassing. I found out today it needs a new rack (£550). But that's the only major expense. 6-Series seem like a great way to join the V8 fun club for not much money, but I suspect you'll end up paying one way or another - as I'm sure I will. But at least I can get a piano in the back of the 5!

Although tuning it shouldn't be a problem
