After years of an outdoor lamp malingering in the back (communal) garden I've decided to try and refurb it
It has a glass surround which takes a hefty candle and has a generous carrying handle.
It's rusty as hell so I've ordered Evaporust, something I've been meaning to get hold of for a while and looking for an excuse
Saw it working originally on a restoration channel called Hand Tool Rescue, and I've even got a couple of the wrenches this chap has made. I think it's a hoot as well as looking at impressive skills (to me!)
One part of the lamp which has pretty well crumbled is a sort of mantle - ok it's a perforated cylinder 45mm diameter and 50mm high with 5mm holes which is welded (brazed?) onto a covering cap which sits on top of the glass.
Bits have already fallen off this so I'm attempting to source a replacement without going into silly money. I've found a
perforated steel tube but it's 50.8mm diameter and 1.6mm thick - the original is probably only 0.5mm.
Maybe I should get a flat piece of perforated (?mild) steel and form it into a cylinder....
Then I have to find someone to assemble it
Any suggestions please?

Hi Simon, I have the very stuff in my shed that may suit your needs. Stainless steel perforated flat sheet left over from my welding days in the oil yards. I never throw anything away
PM me and I may be able to help.

It’s not too thick Simon . All you need to do is form the sheet around something rounded the size that’s required, now welding stainless is another mater, but you may be able to jam the cylinder in the hole.

Not that large Simon, I braze with just a propane torch, No oxygen cylinders needed.
I use something like this but older.
it screws onto a propane or propane/mapp canister.

If you have a blow torch similar to the one Pete uses you could also lead solder the two pieces together.
Well as it happens I'm negotiating getting perhaps one of these
Rothenberger jobs for my recent birthday..

Funny you should ask Jim, very well in fact as I just got it back from being brazed late yesterday evening!
A chap who did my yellow camcover/black plug cover years ago is still operating and sorted it for pennies
Thanks for all the advice and to Jim for supplying material
I'll post a pic later....
