Hi all,

I'm hoping some of you may have experience (hopefully not first hand) of a dilemma I currently have.

My daily driver for the last few years has been an XF-R and, given the performance, the running costs have been really quite a pleasant surprise. That run has sadly come to a shuddering halt however....

It's with a garage now and needs work of about £7k in total to fix various issues - notably the engine (it still runs but has a "ticking" noise that's coming from somewhere inside the engine). Given the value of the car (about the same on a good day) it probably isn't worth repairing, but obviously the car is still worth "something" - especially to somebody who has the space and ability to do the strip down of the engine themselves. Alternatively, the interior (very good condition), alloys, etc. should be worth a fair bit to a dismantlers but I've no experience of how to go about working out how much I could realistically get from either option - or indeed how to find someone who would want to buy it?

Has anyone got any advice they could offer please?

Thanks in advance.
Simon

Depends on how much time you have to spare dismantling, cleaning, advertising, wrapping and posting/conveying!

Money = time smile

Thanks Edinburgh. In an ideal world that might be an option, but realistically I need to find a someone who would look to do the dismantling themselves (or, indeed, the strip down and repair)

The challenge I'm finding is that all I can find online are genuine scrap yards where they are only offering a couple of hundred for essentially the metal value, rather than what the value of the parts could be. But maybe there isn't anyone filling that gap between crushing and selling fully working used cars?

If it was me - I'd contact the Jag Owners Club for advice as someone may offer an acceptable deal for taking away and stripping.

The yards will strip them, if they can sell parts quickly. You have to remember they'll have to pay someone to collect, a truck, then there's the yard plus cost of storage. So say the interior might fetch 1k. Wheels 500 or so. Well how much profit could they actually make if they paid you more than a few hundred quid?

I'd get on Ebay, Facebook market etc and spy out cars in similar condition to yours. See what they fetch and how quickly they shift. I think that'll show you if any specialists are scouring the classifieds.

Otherwise I think you may need to chalk it up as bad luck frown

I have to agree with Szkom. Unless and until they can sell the bits, it has only scrap value to them.

This. Agree with GMan, the proper car forums would be the way forward.
Best of luck.

SRM6 - of course you may be a member of the club anyway! Is the garage trusted / Jag specialist? If it were me and before pressing the nuclear button I'd be getting a second opinion. Had a quick search on XF engine ticking noises and there's quite a lot out there it would appear smile

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions - they are much appreciated. Apologies for the slow reply too - had to contend with some broadband issues over the last few days.

As suggested, I'll get busy and see what I can find on the Jag owners club and also see if there are many being sold on eBay, etc. It's not the most common car so not sure how many there'll be, but might give me a guide.

As for the question (G Man) on the garage, it is a trusted independent Jag specialist (fortunately or unfortunately, depending how you look at it). You're right that there are a few issues with some of the other XF engines, but the garage tell me that this one is unusual ("first they've seen") on the XF-R engine. The essentially same engine in the F-Type R (aside from state of tune) has had a few more issues but seems I just hit the jackpot.

If nothing else, it could be the catalyst to get my 20VT back on the road.... albeit that is going to need a chunk of work too to get it ready!
