is the 20vt really worth the extra? #224427

I'm looking to buy a coupe sometime in the next few months, just kinda wondering if the 20vt is considerably better than the 16vt?

i don't plan to tune it for a while (i'll be 21 when i buy it, so insurance will be tight as it is)

so, which is better standard?

and are they reliable?

cheers.

well insurance will be better on the 16vt
5cylinder for the 20v 4 for the 16v so 20v is more smoother and sounds better and the 16v is getting on a bit these days so the 20v is newer and about a sec quicker to 60 and about 2-3 secs quicker to 100 as standard but since ure 21 might be woth for insurnace reasons going for the 16vt and getting a 20vt when u can afford it mate there both amazing cars!!

The 20vt is a newer car but the 16vt still looks gorgeous and is not exactly a slouch! I think it depends on your budget to buy the car - if you have 4k+, plus a decent amount for maintenance and can get an insurance deal, go for a 20vt ... if you have a budget of 3k or less and you know pennies will be tight for upkeep, go for a 16vt

It's not unusual for maintenance to cost a grand in the first year - turbo, clutch, manifold all cost £400+ to replace ... you may be lucky and it not cost you much more than a few hundred for a service, but you may not

Now u see i'm not too sure about all this "the 20vt sounds better", at the last meet i went to by far and away the car that everyone wanted to be overtaken by was Adyr's 16vt, the roar was just fantastic. The 20vt's sound like a massive hoover.

In my 1 year of coop ownership i've paid out (in mainanence) :

1 small Service - £120
2 new Tyres - £100
New Clutch - £450
New Wishbones, and Cambelt - £750

i was 21 wen i bought my 20vt coupe, the only insurance company to touch me was elephant which is part of the admiral group!! everyone else kept saying you have to be over 25 to insure the coop!! it cost me a grand to insure then and now being 23 it costs me £850 so its not that bad considering a mate pays £3000 on a 1.6 megane coupe!!!

and i would say its worth the extra! when i wanted one i test drove the 4 different engine versions and the 20vt was the first i drove so i was dissapointed with the rest!

Go drive both + check out insurance + make your choice from there. There are plenty of looked after 16vt's out there - and plenty of neglected 20VT's!

2300 TPFT? :|

I was quoted 1100 TPFT on a 20vT, not checked out the 16vT price yet though.

I'll drive both, and see which I prefer then

that was on confused.com, with admiral.

the 16vT was a whole THIRTY pounds less, so I think I'll go for a 20vT

In short, the 20VT is probably not worth the premium over a 16VT if you're short of cash. But the 16VT is more prone to dropping it's cambelt with very expensive results.
I speak as one who has looked at the top of the cylinders of a 16VT and seen what a snapped cambelt can do.
Having said that, a good 16VT is better than an unloved 20VT.

cheers.

I'd say go for a 20VT in that case but make sure it's had all the expensive work (cambelt & ancilliary belts, water pump, wishbones, track rod ends, clutch, oil pipes, brake discs and a full service) done within the last year or so. The total bill for all that work can easily run to nearly 2 grand. Make sure that the oil pressure when the engine is hot and idling is around 2 bar or above and I would get a compression test done before you buy.
Let us know how you get on.

I can't believe what some of you pay for insurance. Mine is £300 and something fully comp for my 20vt. Feel quite pleased to be in my 30s now.

Good luck finding a coupe, you'll love it.

well, its only money might as well enjoy it while I can. I'd rather be paying 1100 quid TPFT on a decent car, than 1100 FC on something dull.

Cheers for the tips Alan
