So, today a white van man drove straight into me at a roundabout. I don't know what he was thinking - as I was exiting the roundabout he just drove across me in front, swiping my bonnet. It was ludicrous - at first I thought he'd done it on purpose, it was such a stupid manoeuvre. After pulling over and talking to him I realised he was just an idiot, so no hard feelings. But it's so annoying - I've looked after this car so well and it's done 190k miles and still runs like new, but I know it's only worth a couple of k because of the mileage. Should I go through insurance and get it fixed (possibly losing no claims etc.)? Or just fix it up myself? How much is a new bonnet and respray?

Insurance now right them off as there are no bonnets available new. Plus there 500 new plus 300-400 for fitting painting and labour!

A used one is around 300, from someone like me, and around 200 to paint it, again by someone like me.

What colour is it?

Skodaman: I think there is a Coupe with 200k, but I'm hoping to break that record!

If you do know where there are some Fiat would like to know, as would direct line, AXA, Norwich Union, Fiat dealer in Wrexham & bodycraft seing as they have all had to buy them from me at the owners reqests instead of having them written off in the last 2 months as there are no new ones.

If you know where they are, im sure you could make a small fortune on them?

i dont want to make a small fortune on them.you can get them direct from italy, speak to steve at alternative autos,he stopped getting them because they send them over in really flimsy wooden crates and they end up damaged when they get here ;\)

hmmmmmm there are loads of after market bumpers etc, could there be a market for aftermarket bonnets?

i spose they would have to be carbon fiber tho, so dunno if that would match up?

ps why would YOU lose your no claims etc?

and if it is written off, then dont you get the option to buy back at reduced rates, so if you got a couple of K for it, that could go towards repairs.

or has white van man offered a cash settlement?

ataik there aint no aftermarkers bonnets been made, yet ;\)
i know for a fact if it kills me im getting rid of my 30kg bonnet for something lighter, its just getting one made up out of grp or cf for a good price as the coupes bonnet is rather large and aint flat like most other cars

There isnt enough demand, if it was worth doing there are hundreds of companies making spurious panels that would do so.

Insurers wouldnt use them as they wouldnt be thatcham approved anyway.

Big_Mike: It was a roundabout accident - insurers usually go knock for knock with those, especially if no witnesses. However, just found out I have protected no claims! So going to claim now. Let's see if the insurers can magic up a bonnet from somewhere! If not, I'll probably go for the buy back option you mentioned and fix it up with a secondhand bonnet and respray. Have to get this car to 200k - it's a mission!

I am impressed by the mileage. Is it all on the original engine?

Yep, original engine, although I have had the turbo reconditioned. Serviced every 12k miles at Powerfiat. Must be Rog's magic touch!

I had a smash in my red na and needed (guess!) new bonnet & new wings. Insurers made full 3 ring circus of the claim. No parts write off etc etc. Independant bodyshop had the car for a month before the bits arrived in the worlds biggest crate. One bonnet in black primer and 2 wings in the wrong shade of red. Crate had Russian shipping tags out of St Petersberg..they wouldn't tell me the source except obviously somewhere east of Warsaw. Body shop guy strangely enough was a Russian. This was in '05 so they were possibly the last?

I've just had a wee look on the internet and there's a company http://www.thepartsgateway.co.uk (sorry don't know how to do link ) that claim they can source bonnets? You have to register with them though and send them your details........

You could also try:

http://www.carsparefinder.co.uk/

Im registered with all 4 companies, so you will probably get a quote back from me too.
