How much of a difference does sound proofing the front panels make?

My ice installer who was well worth travelling for, they give a lifetime warranty on labour, he's done stuff on sky as well, autowave in nottingham. They got back to me re. sound proofing the front panels..

We can supply a MaxMat Pro Doorkit (8 sheets of 45x30cm) which comes with ample material for your fronts doors for £39.99. It will take approx 4 hours to do a proper job and labour will be £80 (should really be £140 but because you are a repeat customer and coming from far away I'll do it you a deal). So £119.99 supplied and fitted.

Seems like a ok deal what does everyone think? I know a fair number of you have had the panels proofed

Sound deadening is well worth it and a must for serious installs, although it's more effective on panels where none is fitted at all from the factory (like the roof). It's particularly useful for lining the boots in saloon/coupe bodyshells as you need as much sound energy as poss travelling through to the passenger cabin rather than disappearing into no-mans-land in the form of a heavily resonating boot lid/rear quarter panels.

I bought a roll of eDead from Fleabay for £35 and did the whole car, so £119 seems a bit steep for just the doors, but then I have the luxury of being able to do it all myself.

I hear a lot of talk of using brown bread, however this seems funny to me as it would promote fungus growth and your coupe would forever be chased by ducks.

Coopless!

rear panels make huge difference to soundproof. not much room for it in doors though.
If you've a 16VT consider boot lining from a 20VT.

when the boot is open there is a shit load of bass but whne its shut its jus vibratin to hell. should i have the rear panels and boot proofed will this force the bass through the car rather than jus vibrate the hell out of the rear end? mines the 20vt

edead is good. used it on my coupe. 35 quids worth wouldnt do a car properly tho. 30sqft was JUST enough to do the rear quarter panels.

Depends on which approach you want to take - 'back in the day' (God I feel old) when I first started playing with the original Dynamat I found that although people were going mad throwing £100's of the stuff at their cars covering every square inch my experimentation found that only covering 50% of a panel had 80-90% of the effect as covering the whole thing (and indeed I remember magazine articles along the same lines at the same time). Since then I've not bothered going mad with the stuff to cover every square inch of a car, just sticking instead to the most obviously resonant panels and covering 50 - 75% of them saving dosh and weight but still achieving more or less the same result. 30 - 35 sq ft is therefore enough using my more 'restrained' approach, unless of course the customer was a budding Sound-Off competitor with a no-limits budget!

or like me you were fitting a set of 3 way components and a pair of 8 " subs into the rear quarter panels \:\) needed plenty of stiffening up

I'm looking into doing mine soon. I noticed eDead on eBay sell 3 types of deadening stuff, foil , foam and paint . I guess most people have used the foil type but has anyone tried the foam or paint? What were the results, what works better for drowning out road/exhaust noise?

What is the stuff some people have tried from B&Q and pound for pound how does it compare? The eDead foil recommend you add 2-4 layers and the foam says that only 1-2 layers will do.

My boot and the inside of the rear quarter panels is all coated in some similar brush on type stuff. I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes, probably a little bit. But it's got rustproofing stuff in it too so that was half the reason I slapped it on.
