I disagree. Once it's up to temperature taking it to the redline wont harm the engine, if it did then the redline would be lower. The redline is the safe limit.

You dont have to go anywhere near the redline to drive fast, mine starts boosting hard at 3000rpm, I've only ever taken it to the redline once or twice, and that was to test how much boost I was holding.

P.S. I'm not trying to defend that guy, if he was redlining it when it was cold then that IS harmful \:P

WRONG.

Hitting the limiter is bad for any car, you risk more damage to the cambelt area and engine mounts etc.

You could tell him that the coupé never uses any oil so not to bother checking it for 10,000 miles \:D

PMSL you guys rule especially the Police squad and 5 bar comments! Awesome!

I'm glad to see you guys can see where I'm coming from with this!

Coupe's should be treasured and not ruined with bodykits and stupid vents and brake lights by the exhaust. It also has a massive scorpion in some ferrari looking grill on the front.....awful!

Another thing made me laugh, when I pulled up in mine I saw the amount of "chav" kids swarming his car saying how "phat" it was! lol

And then one of them says "so which one's quicker" (talking about mine and his) to which the new owner replied "dunno we aint tested em yet"........errrrm who said I'm racing?

Is that damage, or just increased wear and tear? how many healthy cambelts have snapped due to this? Does relining mean taking it as far as the limiter, or specifically bouncing off it?

Bounce off it I meant as opposed to just taking it to that area etc.

Bouncing off the limiter is unhealthy because the mixture is momentarily leaned out. Running *to* the redline should not be an issue for any car - but doing it regularly will increase wear simply because of the high revs.

Hey but I'm only a young lad at 20, never owned a Turbo car before and haven't got a clue about them, I can't even find the turbo on mine (it is a turbo though!) lol but I look after my car the best I possibly can. Just because I'm young doesn't mean I am a moron! People always assume (not saying you are) that a younger guy is going to be a complete twat when he is put ina fast car, obviously this guy sounds like he is one, but yeah, im just rambling on now!
Paul

Sorry dude no offence, just read the wrong way, wat i was say, is that some young lads do not research into looking after turbo, and will just jump in and play.
Hay i'm 23, was 22 when i got mine.

No offence taken mate, like I said, I wasn't saying you were stereotyping like that, but I dislike in general when people assume it applies to everyone in that catagory, (not saying you were ;\) ) although from personal experience of mates I see why people say it.

Anyway back on topic, this guy sounds like a bit of a bell end didcoop, maybe avoid future contact! and if he insists on driving in such a destructive fashion he will probally not be with his disaster of a coop for much longer anyway lol. This is the problem of the 'chavier' (now i'm stereotyping) younger lads getting these cars, they bring down other peoples respect for the cars and they get classed as boy racer 'chav chariots' as what happened to the beautiful classic scoob and evos alike. Terrible!

You dont have to be young to be a tw@t behind the wheel.

Around here evo's are not chav chariots, my boss has an FQ360, but I've never really been into evo's in general. I'd much rather have a Skyline GTR, chavs cant afford to touch them.

Not the same here, must be another North/South divide thing.

I've always said most 20VT owners have penis envy - why do they always think they have something better.

Good on you for looking after your 16VT, these are the future classics and should be appreciated.

Without sounding arogant, on paper wouldn't a 20V turbo be classed as the better car? I am in no way saying it is and many people may prefer the 16V to the 20V, and I know something about having the "lesser" car owning a non turbo Subaru impreza sport, you loose that kinda respect from the turbo owners, but anyone who is sad enough to disrespect someone for having another version of the same car needs a slap anyways. I was seriously looking into getting a 16v as insurance costs etc, but I couldn't find any decent ones that appealed to me, so opted for the 20v.

Could not agree with you more - the 16VT's are all older, and so finding a good one is very hard, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the engine......it's the same as another fairly special Italian number that I love to bits (probably literally)

Yeah but this is <the word I'm not allowed to say>. Classism is enjoyed, required, embraced and drilled into from day one. The market *needs* you look on lesser models/owners with disdain, othewise there would be no selling point for better models and no justification for paying more for them, for some. Yeah of course there is the performance issue, but how many merc drivers buy AMG badged mercs for the driving experience than the classist display of 'I'm more successful than you'? There's not just badge classism, there's model classism too.

btw, as most will know, I do not agree with this principle at all, but there are plenty numb numpty nuts that do because they were told to and don't have the mental awareness to think out of the box...

Of course, anyone who knows anything about Coops, knows that the 16VT was only replaced by the 20VT because of new emissions regulations and had nothing to do with model classism... so numb numpty nuts who thinks they're better is actually less educated, at best and therefore sentiently inferior... ;\)

The ugly clock alone precludes the 16v from future classic status ;\) . This 'mate' who rags his car from cold is obviously fairly stupid - just leave his oil filler cap loose, urinate in his petrol tank, or just shove a big potato DEEP into his exhaust (I do mean the cars, but obviously you can do the same upon his person)

Far fewer than those who buy AMG badges for their otherwise standard and dull cars. I wish, oh I wish, that I had got a patent or a franchise on the sale of AMG badges about 10 years ago. I seriously reckon there are less mercs running around without AMG plastered all over their backside than there are with. And I doubt very much that many of cars which do have the badges have ever been anywhere near Großaspach.

I personally prefer the digital clock to the analog one hehe!

But yea I know exactly what you're saying but I'd say my car is a much a good'a coupe as his if not better.

Mine has subtle engine mods, standard bodywork and black refurbed 16vt alloys and I paid £3k less than he did. Ok he has the "flagship engine" but let's not forget where the 16vt engine started.....

Either way he likes the chav-chariot bodykitted Coupe and I love standard looking examples with toys mainly under the bonnet.

Problem is mine and his will get recognised around where we both go and I'll get known as a chav because ours are so similar and he drives it like he stole it \:\(

re: Redline

Taking it to the redline when warm and under load is fine but there's still risk in doing it, if something is weak or worn then there's a higher chance of it going, our cars aren't getting any younger you know.

The OP said the guy was redlining it when cold and stationary ie not under load.

Doing when cold is obviously bad but I'm pretty sure doing it when the engine isn't under load is a pretty bad idea too as it's not what the engine was designed to.

Thoughts ?

I don`t think i`ve ever redlined my Coop, certainly not hit the limiter anyway. If i`m in a hurry ;\) I usually just change up at around 6k as max power is generated around 5750rpm anyway so not much point in going further \:\) .

I agree Baz, no point pushing it further once the power and torque start dropping off. I've never hit my limiter, just taken it as far as it a couple of times.
