Apologies if this post is better suited to another section:

I'm about to sell my coupe. It currently has a private plate on it that I want to keep. It is due to be sold next week. I will also be buying my new car next week and I would like the private plate to be transferred onto this car.

It used to be that I could take the V5 (or new owners slip), tax disc and mot for both vehicles and swap everything over at my local dvla office in Trafford Park for the cost of £80. But having looked on the dvla website this seems to have changed. Now it seems they take the documents and post them back to you at a later - date 4-8 weeks.

The dilemma is that I can't sell my car without paperwork and the new buyer is being good about tranfering the plate at a later date but does anyone know of a fast/efficient/cheaper way to do this?

Any help is much appreciated

The only thing to do now is to sell the car with the plate, wait for the log book to change hands, then get the new owner to transfer the plate back to you. I did this on a previous car, took us about 5 or 6 weeks. The ony thing is you run the risk of the buyer not giving the plate back to you, we both signed an agreement and the buyer stood by it, but I doubt I could have done much had he not.

no quicker route really as you still have to deal with the dvla unfortunately

used to deal with reg transfers when i worked for a large car fleet company, it may not take that long it just depends on what time of the year it is obviously they are more busy when the regs change ie in march and september

are you going to transfer the reg or put it on retention until you want to put it on another car ??
