I have read a few posts stating that the front and rear speakers are 165mm and 6.5" in size, however I cant search for this, as most speakers are advertised as 6x9 or 6x5 or whatever... what does 6x9 mean? and what type of search can I do to find replacement front speakers? Secondly, anyone got any good (e.g. infinity) front speakers going cheap? btw: are these any good? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6x9-3-Way-1000w-Ca...1QQcmdZViewItemthanks

6 x 9 means six inches by nine inches, it won't fit in the door. you need a 6 1/2" round for the door
look up components
and i wouldn't use them ones off ebay.
If you want a good speaker at a good price, go for JBL, I swear by it!

Thanks Craig.. mucho appreciated..
However why are they 3 parts? I only want the large 6.5" speaker, dont i?
I mean what do I do with the tweeters and crossovers?
Also is it better to go for 3-way speakers, sa opposed to 2-way?

The fronts are components i.e. a seperate woofer (the door mounted one) and tweeter (dash mounted). Coaxial speakers (as you linked to earlier) are not a like-for-like replacement. You would replace the door woofer (single speaker, not coaxial 2/3 way) and the dash mounted tweeter (see here). Crossovers are required to filter the frequencies seen by each component (woofer or tweeter) or just the tweeter in some cases.

Wow..thanks guys..
So I guess I cant just replace my front speakers without also changing the tweeters?
Is there no direct 6.5" replacement to the front door speakers?

Not really. If you don't change the tweeters, then you won't get a flat frequency response. Different components will have different frequency responses, so it is important to use woofer, tweeter and crossover that were designed to be used together.
You could disconnect the tweeter and replace the door woofer with a 2/3 way coaxial speaker. I don't know anyone that's done this though.

Roger - are you sure about this? I thought that there were no crossovers installed as standard just a high pass filter for the tweeter, and that coaxial would be a direct replacement for dorr speakers (and rears)??

You'd need to disconnect the tweeter if you put coaxials in the front, otherwise you'd get too much of the higher frequencies. You are right - there is just a high pass filter on the tweeters as standard.
The rears are coaxials as standard.

Sorry for more layman questions, but what is a co-axial speaker?
If the rears are of this type then why cant I directly replace them with 6.5" 2-way speakers?

"The least expensive and most common type of car speaker is the coaxial. The coaxial consists of a midrange/woofer with a tweeter placed over the cone, either on a bridge or on a pole that extends from the middle of the cone. These speakers are made in sizes that will exactly fit most brands of vehicles. Advantages of this design include low cost, ease of installation, and a speaker that more closely approaches the one loudspeaker ideal, also called a point source, where all frequencies appear to originate from the same location. The disadvantage of this design is a generally lower sound quality for the majority of coaxials available versus the majority of matched component sets available." Nazo - anthing listed as component rather than composite is seperate parts. You can tell by looking at them because with components they will have a tweeter (or 2) mounted in the middle of the speaker.
It is sounds that you, like me, are no expert and components are generally more expensive and require rewiring so you might be fine with just composites. From what I have read I guess that the simple mods of adding sound deadening and attaching the rear speakers to car frame rather the plastic covers will make far more different than the difference between composite and component.
But I suppose if you did the mods and components then it would sound even better..!

Component speakers will have a seperate woofer and tweeter. The tweeter will not be mounted on the woofer - that's coaxial speakers.
