Chaps,
Just thinking about the rear lights on my coupe, about the 2 lower lights on either side with the yellow indicator lenses. Is there a way of fitting just red lenses (like the top lenses) but having yellow LED lights behind them so they flash the right colour? Has anyone done this and would it work?
Any kits out there that achieve this look? Dont want the funky styled LED clusters or to turbo tint them.
Cheers.

Don't think they are available. We looked at this a year or so back, I did some photoshop mockups and I'd love mine to be all red - tidies up the rear no end. But I don;t think you can get them. I thought about buying a couple of spares and having a go at tinting them myself - surprisingly hard to come by, and generally expensive too!

I looked into this before I got the "funky" LED lights.
You can buy the all-red brake/side light cluster and replace the standard indicator unit. But I found the tint to be too red, even with bright/yellow lighting. The glow from them became pink/orange.
I plumped for the LED option in the end, to get them all looking the same.

surely there are cars out there with a red look to the lenses, and yellow light that comes out of them?
What do the fezza's have? Also, I think it could be a good compromise if the lenses were white/clear, and emitted a yellow light, that would work too wouldnt it?

Dave,
Got mine from this guy , however I believe they are out of stock at present?
The lights are actually designed and built by Hella GmbH, for a bus/coach fittment. So you could always source the parts yourself...

I'd be interested in a set of 'all red' lights, as from the back I think the car looks silly with them not matching I also think that it looks silly having just one reversing light ! I have seen the rear lights on an Mgf as well (I suppose its their idea of a rear 'quad light' conversion)

Agreed. The one reverse light bothers me too. But you're limited because of the number actual lamps you have. One option is to have a central rear fog lamp on the bumper - there's an LED kit available - then putting the reverse in boh sides. It's those little things which get annoying...

would it not be better to put the reverse as the single light on the bumper? then the original lights could be totally red?
could maybe then get away with spraying the originals red and wiring the original reverse as a foglight?

Oh yeah, I forgot to say - I think the law is if the lights are there they must work. So It you don't have any reversing lights they can't do you for it plus it'll still pass the mot. I'm not sure if thats still the case though.

so, you don't need a reverse light to pass an mot?
Also, what about those american cars that flash their indicators with red lenses on the rear (produced a red flashing light)? Would that pass an MOT also, or does the car have to be manufactured like that in the first place to pass?
I'm just thinking that if the above are both ok to pass an MOT, then it should be ok to just run with the standard red rear lenses top and bottom, as all that will happen is that when you indicate the light will be red, and ditto with the reverse (if you don't need reverse, then simply remove the reverse bulb so it doesnt come up red).
what do you all recon?

Correct.
Not sure about the rest though, I know US cars need to have quite a few bits changed for the SVA testing.

scratch that:
Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986
These must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens. Lamps incorporating a side repeater are marked either with an 'E' mark in a circle or an 'e' mark in a rectangle above which is the number 5. c. the flashing rate Note: it may be necessary to run the engine when checking the flashing rate
d. that every direction indicator emits amber light, except vehicles first used before 1 September 1965 where both front indicators may be white and both rear indicators red
only valid for cars made before 1965. Bollox.
So can you make an amber light shine through a red lens? If the amber light is high intensity LED style I think that it will still be distorted through a red lens, so we'd need half red/half clear for the indicators.
This is going to be a mission..........................

To my mind the only way to have all rear clusters looking the same would be using an "inert" coloured lense, (either tinted black or white/clear), then you would put the coloured bulbs required for each purpose.
If you put Amber/Orange coloured bulbs behind a red cluster, it will glow red and no where near orange enough to pass MOT.

Hmmm I have been plenty of limo's where the indicators are red though ! (mainly chrysler limo's) I used to have clear rear lenses on my old Fiesta mk2(absolutely years ago) not lexus lights though I must add I had coloured bulbs in them, it used to get annoying having to change the bulbs eveery few weeks, as they would go pink I used to paint them in the end with bulb paint,it lasted longer but never as good as the proper red lense. I grew out out the modding phase as all cars sine have been untouched.
