Prompted by the fact a BMW x5 or 7 maybe left me for dead last night by the time I changed into 3rd, I've decided its maybe time I stuck the coop on an RR. What sort of money will I be looking at?

Cheers smile

Yeah I was gonna say up to £60, just depends on the place, try to find some reviews and look for good experiences on the place first though.

As little as that do you think MCMike!!!

After reading through some of the posts I thought I'd need to be part of an RR day to get it at that sort of price

When you call the RR company make sure you ask them if the computer/system they use is able to read 5 cylinder engines. The first one I went too couldn't and was a waste of time and money.

I'll check with them, come across a place in Doagh, which I'm sure I've heard some of my mates talk about. Think I'll give them a shout

They failed to record boost for starters, now I had just fitted a Gtec1 and that was the reason for the RR in the first place. There were a number of questions flying back at me once I posted the results up on here and I was unable to answer any of them. I think at the end of the day the better RR's know what to expect from a coupe and if the car does not make the expected pwr they look/suggest fixes? I managed 198bhp at the wheels with the chip and think I probably went there with a number of issues like, stretched accelerator cable, boost leak and a turbo on it's last legs.

I have heard a mate or two of mine say their X5s are quite quick, but it's another thing to have one leave a coop. Did it catch you off boost? I followed a relatively new 911 that didn't leave me (at a great rate) once the I was in the right gear with the turbo spinning.

I take it Dyno Demon can read the 20v turbo engine, as I'm hopefully going to make the RR day there next month?

cheers mattb,

bob, without turning this into a v's thread, Sorry Mods but it is all at legal speeds, and purely quoting what happened as a diagnostic tool.

he'd been sitting on my tail for about two miles before we entered a roundabout at the start of the motorway.

I was on inside lane at legal speeds, he sat on outside just at my rear quarter.

2nd gear accelerating from around 20mph and entering roundabout, I had to ease slightly as wheelspin and either just torque steer or slight understeer, but he was still at my back quarter, as we entered MW. I could see him start to go for it so accelerated in second from around 40mph in second and changed up around 6 - 6.5k and within seconds of hitting third i was looking at his rear pull way ahead of me. The sprint was over by the time I hit 70 - 75 and I just let him go.

So I'm thinking I def need to get my coop on RR, even though it still feels quick to me, that x5 or x7 or whatever it is really surprised me

Here are a few numbers for the fastest X5 so you definately have a problem.

A RR with boost curve will definately show you where you're losing power. To be that much slower than one of those, you can't be running much more power than an NA shocked

May get it RR'd I think, though at 7.1 for 0 - 60 he may just have been slightly better positioned on his power than I was. I did change up early and he accelerated on to i'm sure a ton whereas I eased off around 75, though I'm sure he was a car length in front at that point, but I didn't feel like even if I had tried that I was going to catch him

Fair do's, John, it was just a query regarding the situation. And without meaning to get myself into trouble again, I would be surprised if many things at all could actually pull past me just coming off a roundabout, through first and second, my car feels like an snarling animal and mine's standard, so limited in boost through those two gears. Mind you, 7.1 to 60 for a big car like an X5 isn't too shabby, wouldn't want to do much B-road bashing in one though...

That might explain things aust...he was def trying to bait me into a race the whole way to the motorway, sitting as he was right off my bumper. Next time, if there is a next time, I think I may have to do an emergengy stop wink and put his brakes to the test laugh

Ok I've looked up that 4.8is bimmer (I thought I'd clicked on that one on the Autocar drop down menu blush ) and have found the following numbers
0-30mph: 2.0
0-40mph: 3.3
0-50mph: 4.6
0-60mph: 6.1
0-70mph: 8.1
0-80mph: 10.3
0-90mph: 12.9
0-100mph: 16.3
0-110mph: 19.8
0-400m: 14.6
0-400m: Terminal 95mph

It is hugely quick for a 2 1/4 tonne monster but still not a match for a healthy coop. I've run it through the calculater and, from a 40mph start in 2nd gear through to 80mph (a brief foray into 3rd) you should be able to pull only 1 length out of it. Your car could be running perfectly normally and just been caught off boost, but it is liekly that you are a little down on power.

Let us know how you get on with the RR run smile

Nice one trappy, being the tight git that I am (unless alcohol is involved) I had contented myself that I was just a little off the power, but think I'll go for the RR run as it would be nice to know/ensure i'm getting all the horses I should be.

It isn't only to find out your power though, the fuelling is also very important. It's good to see where and what torque you are making and a boost trace can also point to problems.

With all of these results are plotted on a graph, you can quite often see where a problem might lie if it turns out that you are running lowish power.

I've found that my oil consumption depends on the way I drive. If I have a few crazy days it absolutely drinks it, sometimes needing a top up after three hundred miles. Drive it carefully and it doesn't need any for two or three thousand miles...

The type of oil also makes a huge difference. Since changing to Mobil 1, it has reduced the consumption hugely. It may even work out cheaper in the long run...

If the turbo is coming in at 3-3k then you may have a boost leak? It could be worth checking all the boost pipes are on tightly. In 3rd/4th I get full boost at 2.5k.

I'll wait till the weather improves lol, but yeah I'm near sure its not until around 3 - 3.5k i get turbo, and there does appear to be quite a bit of lag so RR is the way to go, then you can all go OH AHH ERM YES HMMM AHHA!
