hello people,

Just been to look at a coupe 16v turbo in yellow,

its on 70k and has multi spoke oz wheels, baily d/valve coilover suspension and a few bits here and there.

only problem with it is it hits a dead spot at 5k (upon turbo boost,)

I asked a mechanic friend and said its prob a connection problem with the turbo as when it goes to spin up it hits the dead spot.

what do you all think??

other then that it drives perfict, starts fine, no iol/water leaks, and sits there ideling fine.

has 11 months mot 5 months tax and has a minor dink on the ns wing.

Would've thought the Turbo would already be 'on-boost' before 5K? Was there any smoke?

Erm... 'minor problem' - I'd investigate that before you commit to buying it.

195 bhp as it was driven out the factory, have you gone though all the history, read the FAQ and checked all the guides?

how much did you pay for it as well? (if you don't mind me asking)

sounds cheep at that price, not to put you off, just be extremely wary about minor "issues"

I would hate for you to learn the hard way (search user shaun2k20v if you want a blow by blow example of just how wrong it can go wrong)

ok the list

what oil pressure is it holding on very hot?
have you tried the hot start and let it run for 5 to check for turbo wear?
when was the clutch done?
when was the tubo done?
do you have all 3 keys?
how many miles?
HPI check?
all the panels the same colour?

there is a huge list of things to check

get the car nice and warm, turn it off and leve it for 5-10 mins start it again and check for blue smoke

The oil pressure can be a little funny on the 16vt for strange readings, but what is it on the coupe your going to look at?

IMO 4 weeks is more than enough time to fix a minor problem.

firstly, you can back out unless for some reason i can't think of you're legally committed to taking it.

secondly, renegotiate with him that you WILL take it at the agreed price if he gets it sorted, or at least diagnosed.

thirdly, if you do take it, book it in to poweritalia in basildon and get them to give it the once over

I dont know enough about mechanics to have any idea what could be causing the revs to be so limited. But I do know that I wouldn't buy a performance car with such a fundemental fault, and I especially wouldn't take the sellers word that it was something simple and cheap to cure.

The chances are if the car was well maintained he would have put it right before trying to sell it.

Tell him if he sorts the revs out you'll buy it

first of all read this

http://www.fiatcoupeclub.org/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=7718#Post7718

your problem could be any number of things with out more information its going to be difficult to diognose

could be anything from a split map pipe to a knackered turbo.

john, i suspect its been priced at this level because of the rev issue. once thats fixed if all else is ok he could probably make 1k on it

That said alarm bells are ringing for me at the moment, if the last owner didnt fix it it could be for a number of reasons, non of which would put me in the mind set to buy the car
he couldnt find it
he couldnt afford to fix it
he wasnt assed about fixing it
he new what it is, and its expensive to fix it

at the end of the day there a 22k new sports car, any maintance bill is going to be steep if you cant do your own work/diognisis

if the prices like 400+ for a clutch, 500+for a turbo fitted worrys you, i would duck out now mate

if that's not the case, welcome to coupe ownership and im glad your taking on a coupe to save it

please forgive the negativity in this post, and in the above but its for good reason, every month we see some one like your self come on the forum with out perhaps doing as much research as they could have.
perhaps with out the nessery budget needed to keep them on the road.

We then get to read fault finding posts for the next 2-4 weeks. these get increasingly desperate. The next thing we see is the coupe name get dragged though the mud once again.
and finally the for sale "spars or repair post" or get to witness yet another coupe get broken and sold for bits of some one's drive

im making a lot of assumptions which are probably not fair, and this is no personal attack on you, or any one else

just the standard buyer be ware post

What idiot goes to the expense of putting a brand new cam belt kit in to sell the car for similar money. LOL

More money than sense.

Totally worth a punt at that sort of money. Aslong as you can afford to throw away £500 or can content yourself with 5000rpm should the worst happen

ah yes, the 16vt is known to suffer with quite sever cam lob wear on some of the higher mileage less well looked after examples

TBH, from what i have read on this and another thread i would suggest the following....

Treat the purchase of this car as a project, expect, and plan for, everything to be wrong / broken and spending lots of money. That way you can be pleasantly surprised when /IF you find some bits are ok.

If you expect it to be a quick reliable car for silly low money that you can simply reconnect a magic vacuum hose on to cure the 5k flat spot issue you are sure to be dissapointed.

I agree with the caution here. But let's put it in a different perspective:

£500 is a tiny amount of money for this car.

If the OP is a car enthusiast with the time, patience, a budget for repairs, mechchanical skills, AND this is not his daily driver then he should buy it.

If he thinks that a quick fix will get him a cheap reliable car that will only need washing every sunday, then he should not buy it.

Financialy, even if it is knackered beyond repair he will get his money back, and in the process will learn lots about fiat coupes.

I can't believe that this is what it has come to for the Coupe - £500 for a runner with Tax and MOT. cry

I have a safe warm and dry lockup, I think I might buy a few coupes at rockbottom prices and just store them for 5 years or more.
Slowly i'll restore them all for when the prices really do go up in value and the 6000 or so currently on the UK roads becomes 2000.

Poweritalia don't touch the 16v models any more so you'll have to find somewhere else. There is a list of coupé friendly garages in the Basic FAQ section of the forum.

just been on the phone to poweritalia,

Said it wont be the cam, he said it will 99% be a map sensor or a water temp sensor but if it was water temp it would idle wrongly.

so will prob be a map sensor.
