Self-reclining Recaros?

Self-reclining Recaros? - 14/08/2011 09:51

Does anyone else's Recaros recline themselves over time?

At first, I thought it was just me, but now I'm absolutely sure its the seats themselves

Basically, over a period of two to four weeks, the seat backs recline slightly and require half a turn to put them back to their original position

The passenger seat is worse (probably because it's empty most of the time and the car's vibrations will make it recline quicker than if it has weight on it)

weird...

Yes Nigel, my passenger seat has it - over a period of a month - month and a half. It's probably down to a loose mechanism somewhere in the seat. Joe's has it as well (more serious) and he's going to try and find out how to fix it.

Yup, mine does this too. It's not got any worse over time though, so never bothered to look into it any further.

Ditto on mine!! wink. Long motorway journeys allow the passenger seat to recline nicely.

If anyone finds a fix.......;)

I always thought it would be just my own car, so I never bothered to post about it until now

It now looks like it's a common issue - isn't it amazing that we're still finding out things about these cars, after many years of ownership?

Has been posted on here before Nigel. I believe there is a fix-your-seat set available from Recaro that also fixes this, but the actual reason is unknown I believe. Might be just some bolts that need tightening.

I'm in this club too!

A quarter turn every week sorts it out.

Don't tell everyone or they will all want a set of these special magic seats though laugh

I've got Cobras in mine which does exactly the same! The Recaro's in my Civic Type R never did this though.

Re: Self-reclining Recaros? - 14/08/2011 11:52

good grief - type "self-reclining recaro" into Google shocked

Seems its a very common problem that afflicts Scoobies, EVOs, Fords, VWs and others as well as Coopsters

Time to speak with Recaro, I reckon

Re: Self-reclining Recaros? - 15/08/2011 11:55

Problem occured on my LE, never an issue with my plus (airbag recaro).

If i remember I took the cover off, cleaned and greased the mech. I think its caused by vibration in the car/seat.

Yep, I get it on my plus, I thought it was going out of position when I flipped the seats forward for access to the rear seats....maybe not then!

No issue on my late non-Recaro "Recaros".

Re: Self-reclining Recaros? - 15/08/2011 19:07

This happens on a lot of seats that adjust with a rotary knob rather than a ratchet and lever, on the rotary type, the knob is prevented from turning without any force (i.e a hand) by a wavey washer and when this washer weakens with age the backrest can work its way back by vibration allowing the geared knob to turn. crazy

Hope that makes sense smile

The cure is a new, stronger wavey washer.

Any chance of you doing a how to MrT?

I looked into this a while back and did not come up with any decent conclusion. Recaro were not helpful.

TrimDeluxe offered to have a look, but in the end I did not make the trip down there.

Weirdly mine only do this for a short while, then it stops and maybe a couple of months later comes back again...

Re: Self-reclining Recaros? - 16/08/2011 10:27

I should be able to, I'm taking the seats out to sell in a few weeks time so I could do one then.
