Do you let other people drive your Coop?

Do you let other people drive your Coop? - 19/10/2011 19:08
Apart from me, it's only my mechanic who gets to drive it!
Greedy? Yes.
Selfish? Yes.
Overprotective? Yes.
Worth it? I've still got it 3 years later haven't I?
Of course it'll probably stop working now tomorrow.

Wife wouldn't drive my sprintie but she's had a shot of my plus and suddenly decided she could see what all the fuss was about....so yes I do, it helps getting agreement with the bills!

Re: Do you let other people drive your Coop? - 19/10/2011 19:21
Wifey has been insured to drive the current and previous Coupes for years (makes it cheaper). She drove the Sprinty just once (at base boost) and declared it "undriveable"
However, now she's dropped the lumbering old Range Rover and bought a Grande Punto Sporting, she's got the turbo bug and I reckon she'd almost enjoy the Coupe.
Personally, I'd rather she didn't....
When the kids are old enough, I'll insure them for a weekend and lend it to them, but I'm more than happy with the way they drive

Just me and JBT, although Flea, Senny Dave and T have had a go - as has Begbie, so in fact lots of people drive it other than me but i wish they wouldn't

Since I have owned her (3.5 years), only Roger, Ruebens and local MOT chap when he drivers her on and off the tester.
I got the AA man to push and work the winch while I steered her onto the truck when she went bang and needed recovering

Lol.
I've drove it, Jay, my dad, RONNIE.
Probably let other people drive it aswell.
But not when I'm not there!!

Only the wife, my mechanic mate and the MOT chaps get to drive mine. At first the wife wouldn't drive it, claiming it was too low and too fast, but once she got behind the wheel she loved it. The Coupe is a right charmer!

Kelv27 will be collecting my coupe from the workshop and car-sitting for me over the weekend while I'm interstate. Not sure how I feel about that yet.

Wife - although she's banned after her last 2 attempts to "modify" it's lines........
My bro drove it to charge the battery whilst I was on holiday, err that's it! I get paranoid that a spanner jockey will rag her when cold so I tend to do all and any work myself. - That's the royal self meaning I watch my Dad as he's better at it than me

Only the missus.... but everytime she does something goes wrong with it!
Never her fault though, - she says!
Now she never wants to drive it again. - Suits me!
And Rog on a road test.
Oh...so
that's how fast it can
really go!

Re: Do you let other people drive your Coop? - 19/10/2011 20:59
Not a chance, the only other people to drive my coop have been Joe and Leighton, oh and Senny Dave a little bit.
I wouldnt let any else not familiar with the coop near it! Expecially that Dodgy HoveDan fella.
Oh and i wont be letting my "sister" either.

The wife, but she hasn't bothered in about 18 months.
My mechanic, within the confines of the garage.
Sensible fellow coupe owners such as collieD and karlos475, but only if I'm driving their coupes.

Re: Do you let other people drive your Coop? - 19/10/2011 21:08
I was pretty protective of mine when it was on the road, obviously trusted it to Rog and Leighton though.
Let the missus drive it once and much to my horror (and amusement) she forgot what changing gear was as she sat there screaming and bouncing off the rev limiter!

I've let my friends drive mine, and my Dad is a named driver too and did most of the driving in Belgium to/from Spa this year. As long as the car was properly warmed up I would probably let most people I know have a go if they asked me (and had insurance
). It's not that precious really.

Barbz,Flea,Porkypaul and Anthrax are the only people to drive my car.
I have also driven a lot of quick coupes including Barbz's.
But my Mrs or anyone else wouldnt be able to drive it.

Bollox, you're always inviting people to drive your car, in the hope it breaks while they are driving, so they have to fix it
It's not as if we steal the keys from you, you willingly let us drive your car
Only my brother, my ex boss, MCMike and porkypaul have driven my car and what a pleasure it was for them too

Bet he didn't have insurance either Mart?
As for mine, usual suspects have been behind the wheel (Leighton, Joe, Senny Dave) and in truth I'd let anyone with insurance have a go, as James says, the coops aren't that precious.
Saying that, that Truffle character would probably wet himself and cry and i wouldn't want that

My mate johny has helped me drive round europe the last 2 years, he did a lap of the nurburgring in it too! And I' ve let most of my mates have a drive when they've asked!
I let my girlfriend drive it a fair bit too, especially when she starts telling me to sell it due to how much it's costing! I'm going to let her borrow it for the full weekend this weekend..........

The day I picked my coupe up, it was driven by me, H2ypr, 2 other mates, and my dad.
Since then I've let countless people drive it. Basically if anyone shows enough interest, they get offered a shot (but only if i'm with em!)
It's not that I dont care about it or anything, I just love the look on peoples faces when the turbo kicks in!

My friend is on my insurance. She drove us around Antwerp...wrong side of the road, poor visibility, cobbled streets, trams and very few lane markings. Needless to say we were both very stressed!
I wouldn't let anyone drive it without my supervision!

I'm very generous with my keys (and with things in general, I guess). It hasn't bit me back yet, but maybe someday it will. In general I think life is too short and possessions too fun not to share.
I'm also generally too trusting, but I find life more fulfilling when you accept the good in everyone and get occasionally burned than going around with a cynical hat on.

I reckon at a quick guess, of the 160k on the 16, all bar maybe five hundred have been driven by me.
Other than that, the usual suspects, and Anita on occasion.
And my father for about five miles, in which he gently booted it to 3000rpm, changed up, rinse and repeat to 60mph...

Flea has drove my car, but then he's drove everyone's coops, hasn't he? I've heard he doesn't ask, he just has a spare key and thraps it when you're asleep
Taffy has also, and he declared it 'quicker than mine when it was running the standard turbo' which was good to hear! Oh and Nif/JBT too. You have to let a trusted friend give your coupé a good razzing round a car park whilst you stand in the middle, The sound of your own coop's 5 cylinder warble gives you goose bumps!

My father in law also had a go but I had to stop him after only a few yards, he was reving the nuts off it while riding the clutch...
So only CC joe allowed now and I know that if he broke it he would fix it

I'm with Deadlock on this - my wife drives (and has commuted in) all my cars, 20vt, TVRs, M5 etc - my mates who are into cars (and decent drivers) have driven them all too (and I've driven theirs) - cars are great, and part of the pleasure of having fun/fast ones, for me, is seeing the enjoyment/terror other people experience when driving them

Fantastic post... and I agree. I get pleasure when people enjoy driving my car... especially when they are not expecting what the coupe can do. I am careful with who I let drive it though, I must have faith in their driving abilities.

My dad drives my coop every chance he gets, says its far more "interesting" than his own BMW 750i. My other half will occasionally drive it, although it scares the
out of her, still progress though, she refuses to drive my Chevy Astro. Anyone else would have to beat me unconcious to get my keys...

This. My wife is a brilliant driver (apart from scaring an Alfa salesman once on a test drive, but that's another story). Although she is perfectly happy to short change and never get into the boost.
Mate drives mine with me down to France each year. Although this is partly because otherwise we have to go in his TT which I hate.
I just think that life is too short to be paranoid. Apart from wondering what that noise/rattle/slightly odd thing is when we're driving these little darlings.

I will let anyone drive mine. If it goes wrong then I have a reason to buy another one
Had planned to do one up this year. Not had a good year though so had to forget about it for now. Eldest son has been driving my latest one. He now wants one. Told him I will buy him one after xmas. He drives a Corsa 1.2 at the moment, but only when he can't drive mine
He now has 5 yrs no claims. Told him he must start on a N/A though.
Recently found out how much it has been costing me to let the wife drive mine. Missed lots of calls whilst at work. Noticed a text. I then called the wife to see what she wanted. She had been at a petrol station for about half an hour trying to find the lever to release the petrol cap

Well after repairing a tiny leak in one of the Brera's tyres (the compressor and latex stuff) she suddenly noticed you shouldn't drive it over 50mph. Errr... But she was happy enough to do so while the tyre wasn't repaired yet.
Anyway.
Last night she went to her mothers (an hour drive) and there we had it... she reluctantly used the Coupe because my sister destroyed her engine and is using the 147.
I won't feel at ease. What if something happens! You know if something happens it won't have been on purpose yes? I don't like driving it. Will you reverse it out the garage? And when I get back you put it back in? Anything I should pay attention too? What's all those dials about?
So hey - if this one moves while driving it's no good, when stationary it shouldn't go below 2 and that other one shouldn't go above 100. Stop if it does. If anything else happens, the car will stop for you. That's it. Try enjoying it.
Four hours later she returned, said she didn't dare driving on the steep driveway at her mum's for fear of breaking the lip and left it on the pavement, and when driving in the garage I noticed the fuel needle had dropped just one line. She averaged just under 7l / 100km.
Respect? Or you guys just contaminated her with the most severe case of Coupe paranoia?

Last night, as I often do, I was giving the cheeky young oik in accounts a lift to his bus stop a couple of miles away when I just randomly said "you want to drive" and gave him the keys.
He was well chuffed.
We didn't get out of traffic enough for him to give it full beans but he dropped back a bit when he could then had a little turbo fun
We're driving along and he says "this is only the second car I've ever driven!"
I said "what, you've only driven your dads?" and he said "no this is the third. I used to drive a fiesta on my lessons"
I've no idea why i did that. He's only the second person to drive mine and the other one wa a fellow
(though it was Craig so that was a bit scary too)

I've not read the last 3 pages but my answer is i've let some of my trusted friends have a drive but if the misses thinks she is going to ever get behind the wheel she can think again.
5 years of coupe ownership and not yet let a girl behind the wheel
she did say to me once "I know that if I drive it I will crash it" ... sealed that one then with a "never going to get a go then" and i've kept to my word
