Long term Coupe owners - 24/03/2015 08:01
I was looking at the service history for my Coupe and had forgotten I first purchased it back in 2002 so it's been in my hands for 13 years give or take. I wonder how many longer term owners we have on the forum?

Neil's obviously too ill to reply, but he's probably the oldest long-term 1 owner from new Coupe owner with his N-reg 16v n/a, owned since Aug 95 IIRC. I come a poor second, 2nd owner (after Fiat UK) but owned for 18 years (since Feb '97)

Owner of a steel grey 20v turbo which I bought second hand in 2003. So nearly 12 years.
It's now starting to show its age, but I've been slowly working my way through everything that needs doing.
However as much as i would like, don't see it being suitable as a daily driver any longer.

6 Years with the LE for me but my second Coupe - 16V NA before - though I am getting a yearning for a Brera S currently! Glad to see you're still about Gary. Didn't think I'd seen your car around Coventry for a while.... Hope alls' well....

Re: Long term Coupe owners - 24/03/2015 20:49
I've been popping in from time to time to see how things are these days. I haven't posted for a while but I want to get back into the swing of things
I left Coventry a while ago now but I'm only down the road now, in slightly leafier parts.
Sadly my coupe has seen better days. It's either going to need a full resto job both mechanically and bodily or she's destined for the great scrap heap in the sky I'm afraid
. I've made sure she's been started and left to idle for a good while at least once a week but a wheel hasn't turned for a year now. I just need to find someone who wants to take on a big job.
Hope you're well buddy.

Three 20VTs and a 16V N/A since 1999, with a year's sabbatical in 2002 while I was distracted by a Dancing Donkey. Total mileage is about 250,000 in my hands

I was going to suggest that it might have been a ploy to ensure better reliability, but that would appear to have backfired....

I have had my 20VT for 10 years in June this year, and it now has 137,000 miles in it, i picked it up with just 35,000 on the clock...i won't convert that to £££'s because i might cry!
It is good to read that I am not the only person who has stuck with it...my parents, and the boss, all think I am mad...!

I did successfully give up in around 2006. Followed by around 6 years of being "on the
volkswagon
group vehicles."
Unfortunately, due to dire personal circumstances, and an increasing sense of loss, I bought another Coupe. I wake in the night with the cold sweats, screaming about a snapped cam belt. My bank manager is refusing to lend me any more for mods. And my other half is now also addicted.

Re: Long term Coupe owners - 25/03/2015 19:52
I'm 12 years this August. 3rd owner. Got her with 35k on the clock now sitting just under 118k.
Still love everything about the drive and design!
I don't intend to give her up although everyone thinks I'm mad cos I've easily spent about £20k on keeping her sweet.
Just moved house and the guy in local garage refused to fix her cos it was going to be too costly for the age of the car!
Eh...I'll decide...heart rules head...she's fixed and looking mint (odd rust spot but on the agenda) and I'm

Test drove the Alfa Twin spark and Fiat 20v turbo at the local Alfa/Fiat Showroom. Went with the Fiat. Ordered the car in October 97, got delivered in May 98. Best wait of my life. Got mats, a full tank of petrol and a Fiat Brava umbrella thrown in as extras - woohooo lol What a drive back home....reversing into the drive took a bit to master at first. Still have her and she was vanilla until 2010. Still only 53k miles and I've enjoyed every mile in her.

1. coupe 16vt bought in 2010, owned it for 2 years, sold it
2. bought a 1.8 16v in 2012, wanted to restore it, but hit a deer at 70km/h, trashed
3. bought a 20V VIS in may 2013 and very happy with it since.
So I've owned 3 coops in 5 years, and the VIS is the best

Grey 20v VIS - will have owned 6 years this June, ceased been the daily drive about 4 years ago so only done about 20K in it in that time.
Although it died about 2 weeks ago so currently waiting for a wknd with some time to try and establish whats going on. Hopefully nothing too terminal!
I keep leaving the mags saying it will be / is a future classic and will appreciate in value around the house in the hope it justifies me continuing to plough money into her as "good business sense" - which is what I tell my partner.

Re: Long term Coupe owners - 14/04/2015 19:52
I bought my sprinty new in 1999, that one did 290,000 miles before it was retired to scrap.
Had a 16vt for about two years put 40,000 on that, wife wrote it off :-)
Bought another red 20vt and stuck 100,000 miles on that before that was also scrapped.
Bought a red 20vt plus about two years back with 80,000 on it......it is up to 147,000 now.
Have managed to put about 200,000 miles on other bikes and cars in that time (60,000 in a caterham!).
Not sure how much longer i can run a coupe every day, bits are getting hard to find (even at Motormech).
I did buy a nice (so they say, reliable) VW just before christmas, it has been recovered three times by the RAC since then and I have only driven it for 7 weeks!
Maybe the old fiat coupe is the thing I should stick with

I love reading posts like this, 290k miles....superb. Mine has just clocked 100K, your petrol bills must be fairly large. Have a look at this for German reliability or lack of it:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32332210Oh 11 years ownership for me, thought if I get 6months out of her before the turbo or engine blows it will be an experience...like to keep her forever really. She never blew and has had in 11 years regular belts, oil and filters, a suspension refresh, brake refresh, alternator and a downpipe...that is it.

And don't forget the Italians have the other 2 slots in the bottom 6 (Jeep and Chrysler, now both Fiat Auto brands
)
But to be fair, the list is based on models made before the 100% Fiat takeover
