Prang! - The Plot Thickens!

Prang! - The Plot Thickens! - 19/04/2016 23:10

Well, well, well! I looked up the car I drove into at Tesco and it is not taxed. Which leads me to believe that it is not insured either. The driver said she could not remember the name of her insurance company. And she texed me today to ask if I would pay for the damage outside of the insurance. I said "No" because my no-claims is protected. Surely it would usually be the at-fault driver who would suggest this, as it's no skin off her nose where the money comes from. I have a feeling I won't be hearing anything else. It annoys me because I wouldn't dream of driving without insurance, or tax. I wondered why she yelled at me at first but then went all nice when I said we should swap insurance details. Anyway, what would you do? Would you report her or just forget about it?

Oh and she also said she had reported the accident to the police, perhaps so that I would not bother to?

Not sure of the rules on private property (car park)

But by law you should report the accident to police in a reasonble time.

To be on the safe side I would report it online to the police saves you time waiting ages at the station.

Also I from your insurance company even though your protected no claims I think insurance companies still increase the premium after accident
But then they add the no claims discount.

You only need to report the accident to the police if there are injuries.

Report the car for not having any insurance! think you can do it online
Also refuse to pay for anything especially if she does indeed have no insurance!

Your call! , but i imagine its just hassle you could do without!

I'm pretty sure that you still need to have insurance, tax and a valid mot on a private car park ie pubs etc . Tesco is not private it's a public area.
I can't sorn my car only if it's in a garage, lockup or a drive connected to your home.

If the other driver is not insured and you have fully comp insurance you will probably have to pay your excess to make a claim!

Any claim will increase your premium at renewal protected NCB or not.

found this out .."If it is publicly accessible, then the provisions of the road traffic act apply, which includes insurance, speed limits, drink driving etc. "

But if YOU dont make a claim it is up to the other driver to make a claim on your insurance . If this happens and they pay out YOU dont have to pay an excess as YOU have not made a claim (It happened to me)..you will still lose you NCB though

I would report the incident to your insurance company and let the other party do all the work..Your company will know if she has insurance or not

If you haven't already, you need to advise your insurance company of the incident, including any specific details (names, reg no, etc).

You have to do this even if you're not claiming on your own insurance for repairs to your own car.

They will also advise on whether you need to inform the police.

Don't work outside your insurance or you could leave yourself liable to personal claims for injury or damages.

After that refer everything to your insurer, its what they're for smile

really, not sure why, it's usually possible to work out fault or apportion blame why a straight denial?

Conversely to all the other advice, we are talking a minor damage only impact, to a veteran car, no injuries, due to negligent driving by it would seem the OP in a car park, so forgetting the possible document offences of the other driver, this could easily be sorted between parties to make good themselves rather than alerting the insurance companies who will be the one's who gain from this by increasing premiums.

But it seems that is the way that things are going in this case ,,if your insurance company thinks you are liable they will pay ..whatever you say.

I had been hit by an uninsured driver a number of years ago. They offered to pay cash and I accepted. I had took details of their driving licence as part of the agreement. I.e if they didn't pay, I would be calling at their house! It's a toss up if you think they wil pay or not. If not police and insurance is only way to go.

Put her car registration in here It'll tell you if it's insured or not.

Hey Annie, what's happened with this..?

Re: Prang! - The Plot Thickens! - 25/04/2016 04:29

supermarket car parks are public property and an accident or drink driver etc can be arrested etc etc.....

If you don't have any damage caused to your car, I would wait and see if you hear anything from your insurance first. If the third party doesn't have insurance, you wont hear a thing and any claim against you wont be an issue. If you do hear something, then chances are she was indeed insured and you can claim ignorance and say that the third party said she would inform the insurance companies..........your call though

She has not, as yet, contacted my insurance company as far as I know. Her car is insured, but is it insured for her I wonder? It is definitely not taxed and some insurances are invalid in that case.

Well, I have to say-

Perhaps that is 'her' problem.

Where does it leave you, however in terms of the cost of repairs?

If she makes a claim my insurance company will have to pay out. But I am not claiming for my car as it is only scratched.
