I think you'll see prices edge constantly upwards now for any good Coupe.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't let mine go for £15k, but I guess mine is a very different proposition.

Don't be too surprised if you regularly see Coupes for sale over £10k. The very good ones will soon be in the teens and I really wouldn't be surprised if something truly exceptional popped up at £20k plus

Remember, there's only about a thousand left in the UK now - rarity does weird things for values, regardless of whether the car was any good. Add in the fact that the classic car press seem to be latching onto the Coupe as a likely cult-classic and you've got the potential for a bubble. The hard bit is working out when to sell just before the bubble bursts

16 years ago I bought a 1960 FIAT 1500 Cabrio for £2000. It is now worth in Auction £45K or £55K from a dealer. It owes me about £6k. OK so inflation at 2.5% has helped, but it's done well.
I paid £3k for my mint coupe 6 months ago. In 10 years this will be £20k at the very least. I expect to spend at least £5k on mechanical work in this time.
However Mileage will be circa 3000 per year.
I did not buy the cars to make money, but because they are Italian, very red, very rapid and no one I know even knows what they are!

Surely a better gauge would be what they are selling for, rather than the listing prices. Have many of the cars advertised recently for 5-figures actually sold?

It seems that Coop prices have always very generally, followed a pattern of:



Good 16v/16vt/20v/20vt and average LE/Plus:

Peanuts......medium......decent......peanuts......medium......decent......peanuts......medium......decent.


Above average LE/Plus:

Medium......decent......amazing......medium......decent......amazing......medium......decent......amazing.



Basically, whenever the 16v et al are at a peanuts level, the above average LE and Plus will be at a medium level.

And then you can get 'special' Coops like that unregistered, low mileage, yellow 16v, which don't follow the general pattern above and at any given time could very well be higher than even the most expensive LE or Plus.

But yeah, robcal has asked a very interesting question. How many of these 'amazing' price level Coops actually sell for these amounts?

Bad news for me as I will probably never afford a good turbo one now!

The answer to that one is perhaps going to be more and more as time goes on. They might not sell within a week of going up for sale but if the positive media continues then so will the interest. Just got to wait for the right buyer for the car

Does it really matter what our Coupe is worth.

Doesn't that only become an issue when one wants to sell it.

At that point, some seem to consider recovering what they had spent on it as being paramount and place ridiculous figures on their adverts.

These are 20 year old cars from FIAT, not that old, not that well regarded amongst the classic community and not everyones "cup of tea".

Buy your Coupe, Drive your Coupe, Enjoy your Coupe, Love your Coupe and if you do not love your Coupe anymore get rid of it.

I for one, love all three of mine (in various states of raodworthiness) and I am enjoying them for what they are and care little about what they may or may not be worth if someone wanted to buy one of them. Hopefully with continued maintenance I can keep driving them for many many years to come.

In my long experience the people who buy cars for increase in value are not real enthusiasts.
However by increasing the value they do encourage owners not to scrap their cars, but make them saleable.

I buy my cars just for the pure pleasure of looking at and driving them. Most have cost me money -some a lot!

I usually sold them on because I needed the money to buy another car or my wife was sick of the mess.

Here are a few I sold, but in hindsight should have kept. I hate to think about the Motor Cycles!

The FIAT coupe has not been on my radar for 20 years, but having, on a whim, just bought one It is a car which gives me great pleasure just to look at, pamper, and drive as fast as common sense and conditions safely allow.
I do understand after reading this forum that it will cost me, but hey what the ! as they say

What's basically happened is that older, enthusiast cars in general have gone up quite a bit in price over the last few years.

For example, I see manual, twin turbo, Toyota Supras on sale for well over 20k! Whereas a few years ago, they could be seen around the 10k mark. And a restored Lotus Esprit S1 is on at the moment for 100k - a few years ago I saw one for less than half that amount! Of course as with the Coop there are various editions of these cars each with different levels of desirability, but they have all gone up accordingly.

A top of the range Supra can command a doubled price because it's attained a legendary status with Japanese tuner fans mainly for being highly tuneable and the Esprit S1 enjoys a tripled price because it's the original one, it's got the James Bond connection and although it's no longer going to be viewed as a supercar, it essentially has still got a prestigious badge.

Compare all that with the Coop. Despite it being a really great car, it misses out from also fully benefitting from this same type of price increase. Mainly because of its reputation as a Fiat. Even with lots of glowing articles being written about it now and it attaining classic car status, to people who aren't in the 'classic, pretty, Italian sports cars' fan club, it's largely going to be a potentially unreliable, not too desirable, old Fiat. Yeah, people may look at it and say nice comments about it and find it interesting, but if it came down to parting with their money, they're going to be apprehensive. And that's just for an averagely priced Coop!

So while you've got non enthusiasts being unsure of even the averagely priced Coops, it seems that all these 5 figure prices do is invite a greater level of scrutiny, mainly from the Coop enthusiasts themselves, who actually know what the car is like.

Perhaps the Coop is destined to always largely be a reasonably priced, 'bargain' car, with a 5 figure Coop coming on sale every now and again?

I estimate coupe values have increased at a rate of approx 15% per year over the last 4 years.

I do not think coupe values have changed at all - indeed I do not think you could safely invest money in one and achieve a 15% annual increase in return on that investment, especially if one doesn't invest in at least equal measure to its maintenance.

Pretty sure I'd get £1250 for the very good VIS I paid £800 for 4 years ago. I haven't spent any money on it.

I paid £700 for a 16vna last year - was I lucky, did I negotiate a good deal, was the seller desperate to sell it ...

OK, I paid £4800 for my 80k LE 2 years ago. Pretty sure I'd get £6k for it now.

Maybe, however the 20vt I bought 3 years ago for £3500 is probably worth less now due to the number of miles I have put on it and the increasing list of jobs that I need to do when the 16vna is back as my daily driver. And I have spent around a £750 per year in keeping it on the road.

My LE has just sat in the garage and been started and moved every few weeks just to stop the brakes seizing and gravity doing it's thing to the fluids. I would need to put an mot on it of course to realise that £6k. And I will change the oil this spring.

I would have had them both back on the road last summer but decided there wasn't enough metal in my ankle in May which meant I couldn't walk all summer unfortunately. So please don't chastise me for leaving the oil in there for an extra year!

So agree, there are some costs to come off the 15%.

Bought my LE in 2008 for £5,500

Spent about £5,500 on various work over the next 4 years including full respray.

Sold it in 2013 in "mint" condition for £2,850...

Saw it for sale a few months back in "good" condition for £4,500

Demand is rock bottom and has been for a while. Supply is now drying up to the point that prices have started to slowly rise over the last few years.

I don't see demand changing much but supply will continue to decline so prices are likely to continue rising slowly.

IMO nearly all these high priced standard coupes have been bought by dealers hoping to turn a 100-200% profit.

£15k for 87k miler plus.......mmmm, mine is going for sale priced at £45k
