Is anyone buying Coupes anymore?

Is anyone buying Coupes anymore? - 18/06/2018 18:42

Having recently failed to find a buyer for my car, and looking at the competition for sale, it appears nothing is selling. There are currently around 20 Coupes for sale on eBay, never mind all the other places, so maybe there's too much choice. People are advertising cars at fair prices but then having to knock around 20% of the price and they're still not shifting.

I've read many a thread on this forum over the years and the general consensus appears to be that prices have been going up. Really?

If you have a look through the Coupes for sale section you can see the history of Coupes which have sold and the length of time taken to sell. This area of the forum the club deliberately keeps the old posts so users can track the prices.

Rightly or wrongly, I suspect that the Plus and LE's will get a premium over all the other models, irrespective of age condition or mileage.

I keep tabs on a number of 80's and 90's cars on ebay and that place genuinely seems to be the worst place to sell, it appears to be almost literally full of time wasters. Cars are constantly being relisted.

I would consider an auction for example this one where a decent one owner went for what I'd consider to be lower than expected but still fair.

I also consider the forum to be a good, and free, place to advertise your Coupe. It is a captive market and we have new users registering daily smile

Where is yours currently advertised?

Mine was on ebay with a set price with the 'make me an offer' button. You're right in that ebay appears to be full of time wasters at the moment. I had one very cheeky offer which I turned down. I felt my car was fairly priced, but my honesty about the good and bad points possibly put people off - I'd rather be clear from the start about condition etc.

Next, I'll probably use the forum as people on here appreciate what has been spent on a car and why. I already have selling rights but it seemed a bit of a hassle at the time to sort out an ad with the photos.

After speaking to some friends in the car sales side of things though, it does seem to be a real buyers market at the moment as nothing seems to be selling like it should.

Yes indeed it is a buyers market at the moment, but the Coop is one of those cars that it takes a person who has soul & passion when it comes down to it, to coin the Italian cliche driving & to do the beastie justice you've got to throw some money at it as well.

The Coop is not the choice for your average driver who is looking for something cheap & fast, many will still view it as an expensive running car for them.

Presumably you have a sufficiently detailed ad on ebay so can copy paste that. so then it's only your photos and to upload get the photobucket app then link the photos to the forum.

Here is the step by step guide. and shows the detail of how to do this.

Here's an idea of what kind of cars are popular:

Most people see cars as an everyday consumable item.

Think of the Fiesta and Golf as the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9. Highly popular at the time, they sell extremely well, the next model comes out, they get upgraded and are forgotten.

For most people, even an absolutely fantastic example of an LE/Plus Coop is the same as:

There's currently just over 1000 fiat coupes on the road and same again off the road that some may make a comeback from

So they aren't all that rare yet

Potential buyer numbers is a lot less than for most other cars
And with some of the prices asking for 5,000 plus
Of course buyers are going to hold out for top notch examples

In my opinion it's best for it not to be modified
Classic cars should be as close to how they left the production line in my opinion

Speaking as someone in the market for one

Is anyone actually selling them!

I have had mine listed, on and off for quite some time. Whilst I've been away I have had a few interested parties contacting me and I'm now messing them about as I currently contemplate keeping the flipping car!

When I placed the add the car was definitely For Sale. Early last month I removed the private plate and was still 100% sure it was going to leave me.

And now, who knows. I've never felt so truly messed up about letting go of anything before.

Similar here i was definitely going to sell my car in April and May but now im hopefully moving house so its the last thing on my mind and if the move goes through i finally have a garage, so will give me more time to ponder take it off the road at winter etc. cost me nothing except for insurance and tax so hopefully cheaper insurance being garaged and no more tax when not used
perhaps next year???

And AMEN to that magooagain-never a truer word spoken!

Hope everyone has the chance to get out in their coupes during the sunshine - that goes a long way to making up your mind about keeping one.

Re: Is anyone buying Coupes anymore? - 22/06/2018 08:49

The other day I decided to have a couple of things done to the car to make it more saleable, including a fresh MOT and a full service. Due to other things that needed sorting I ended up spending 3 to 4 times what I initially planned - I know this happens to most Coupe owners. And all this for a new (potential) owner to enjoy.

Then, after picking the car up I discovered one of the injectors decided go on strike. I stopped at services for a while in the hope the car would cool enough to get the injector working again, but it didn't. I nursed the car for the best part of 100 miles up the M1 and the M62 whilst it drove like and absolute pig. I genuinely decided I'd had enough of the bloody thing - I considered giving it away for free as at least it can't cost me anything else then. I'd already told the Mrs about the bill, and needless to say I'm amazed the divorce papers haven't arrived yet. I also know that the car will need some money spending on some of the bodywork before the next MOT, something I'd covered on my original sale ad, but which clearly deters people from purchasing it. Having spent some time rumbling along the inside lane, all of this had gone through my mind. Then something happened....

Having dropped down the slip road to exit the M62, I sat at the traffic lights. There was a slight judder from the engine and the injector warning light went off. I was 40 minutes from home, the sun was setting, and the roads were quiet. For that part of the drive home, I forgot about all the bad stuff. The image of my wife looking so angry about 'another bill' disappeared from my mind, and I ignored the invoice I'd earlier placed on the front passenger seat. The lights changed and I pulled off the roundabout onto the empty dual carriageway. I gunned the car using all the power and used all the road in the bend to maintain balance a grip. A quick change from 2nd to 3rd and away she howled...

I got home and walked in the house with a big grin on my face. Realising there was still a frosty atmosphere, I had to work at looking somewhat disappointed just to evade a row.

I am now in a difficult position.

1. I can re-advertise the car in the next couple of months and sell, but for much less than it should be worth.
2. Or I get some more enjoyment out of it and sell in the spring, but with a few months MOT left on it.
3. I keep it (hopefully not at the detriment if marrital bliss) and spend some more money on it before the next MOT.
4. I keep it, enjoy it for the next 12 months, then pay £300 a year undercover storage to keep it off the road until I'm more comfortable at spending more money on it. Afterall, out of sight is out of mind.

Great input! Ownership can be a love/hate things at times. But there is a reason we all fell for the coupes in the first place. Heart has to rule head- or what a boring life we would lead.

Only you can make the final decision - but the above is what I picked up from your posting.

Not too hard to resolve a dying injector-then every journey should put a smile on your face?

That's hit the nail on the head. Money is transient, memories last much longer !

And Coupe ownership is not necessarily a rational choice !
