Thinking of selling my NA

Thinking of selling my NA - 25/08/2019 18:53

I am looking to buy a turbo coupe next week and as much as pains me my head tells me I need to be practical and look to sell my NA which I have owned for best part of 15 years.
I really would want it to go to a forum member who would look after it as I have but really not sure what would be a realistic price. What the best route to price the car fairly but to reflect condition and spec. I would likely sell with the number plate.
I will not be in a rush so may try a classic car ad route first, what are your thoughts?

Ashley,
My thoughts are, firstly that you have a really great example of a NA and someone will get very good car. Secondly, brilliant news that you’re going to join the rest of us- in the fast lane!!!

Ashley, it might be worth contacting Joe at FCSS - there's an off-chance he could help with a valuation...

They don't seem to go for much in comparison to the turbos, mine is very similar to yours (probably not as clean) and I paid £1600 for it recently, it was a 64k with 12mths mot. I missed out on a 25k one for £2500, I've seen one labelled as as a baby Ferrari (for no good reason that I could see) for over £10k so it's really hard to know where to pitch them.

I'm in a similar situation to you. Bought my VIS before my LE and could do with not having three cars and a motorbike.

But I decided not to sell the VIS simply because the NAs are so unloved the number of them on the road is dropping fast. Down to just 181 now and the VIS is a small portion of that. 46 fewer on the road than just a year ago. 26 of them have disappeared entirely in that time. Expect the trend will continue until they are seriously rare.

The VIS gives me a great deal of pleasure because you can rev it through without ending up doing ridiculous speeds like the turbo. That means I can enjoy that wonderful engine that much more often than in the LE. Also it's a little softer so bumpy B roads are glided over with ease.

As a 20vt owner- that's a great looking car Cooperman,

You will love the 20vt club. But I bet you will miss that car if you let it go. So rare etc.

I wish the club could have a fund scheme- where we could place cars needing to be sold into a holding area-until the next forum based owner can come upon it! Wishful thinking I know.

Hold on for the right buyer!

That sounds really interesting MM- can you PM me with your thoughts around how something like that might work along with any knowledge of a scheme currently in place elsewhere?

It could work like an asset backed pension fund. I think it will quickly become complicated, possibly subject to financial regulation.

PM Pete,

BBR is on the vibe already! But with the view that what you volunteer in you could hopefully get back. While saving coupes.

I know that in some clubs you can donate cars that you no longer want or need so that they can be saved and passed to future members and save them from being scrapped. I suppose a reasonable fee could be charged to members who wished to save them, over time any profits could be built up to purchase more desirable coops to await more suitable owners.

A fundamental point to keep in mind: the club cannot make a profit, and nor can it increase its assets over and above what they currently are, without significant interest from HMRC...

Well best laid plans etc... flew up this morning and had a good test drive which put a smile on my face. Car looked very tidy and smart. Checked the header tank and found mayonnaise type deposits and very murky coolant.
Just landed back at Gatwick so a long day but alas no Coupe Turbo:(

Think I will just enjoy my NA for now and if something comes along in time I will try and ensure it’s up to scratch

Better to have backed out before you were committed Ashley, than to have carried on simply because you had travelled a long distance.

I know one member from round here who did just that and he was regretting it before he had got halfway back from Scotland.

He never did bond with that particular coupe even though it was what he thought he wanted and he sold it on quite quickly.

That’s interesting Simon, I wonder if the header tank problem was sorted?

It was not worth the risk Pete, I felt better having walked away and had a chance to think it through. The owner didn’t believe there was a problem so there was nowhere to go with it really.

Not seen him since Ashley, he wasn't at our last monthly meet.

Not sure what your budget is/if your looking for mint or not.

I use this site sometimes- as its surprising what comes up.

How about a "small" LE project- there is one advertised. There's a rolling shell yellow Coupe for £500. And some well polished nice looking cars for £10k.

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1133769

As I know you will appreciate from your car- its finding a good/loved coupe that's getting harder.

There are nice ones out there so KBO!
