I have made a momumental error

I have made a momumental error - 02/02/2020 15:28

Good day,

Over the past couple of years I have been mulling over replacing the Coupe with something a bit newer, something more reliable and cheaper to run. I had dreams of paying less for fuel, less for tax, less for insurance and less for repairs. I had dreams of getting replacement parts for my car without having to search high and low on the internet for them, or asking multiple forum members if they had any spares to sell me.

A few months ago I decided that I would do it, and I decided that the replacement would be a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost - which is a decent car by all accounts, and it ticked every box.

Well this past week I got fixed up with a nice little deal on a Fiesta and it's sitting outside my house as I type this message.

Now I just need to sell the Coupe and my days of cheap motoring can begin!

.....except that I don't want to - What was I thinking?

I have had the Coupe for over 13 years now. It hasn't always been plain sailing and there have definitely been times where I have felt like pushing it into the local lake. But I just can't bear the thought of not having it anymore.

I'm almost positive that I will regret selling this car every day of my life if I go through with it, and this past year has been great - I have driven it every day and it hasn't missed a beat. I look out of the window and see it sat there looking gorgeous, then I look at the boring Fiesta with it's quiet engine, boring looks and overly sharp brakes, there is just no comparison.

I feel like I just want to sell the Fiesta and carry on with the Coupe, am I being ridiculous? lol.

You’ve certainly went from one extreme to the other
You could have maybe went for a wee 1.4 turbo or something that still had a bit of pace but saved you some money at the same time

The new Fiesta ST with the 1.5 turbo 3 pot is meant to be an absolute hoot to drive.

But I totally get not wanting to sell the Coupe. Its probably a heart vs head thing. Fiesta = head. Coupe = heart.

Can you keep the Coupe as a garage queen? Fiesta is a nice runabout.

This ^. After 13 years your spend is pretty much rolled up anyway and all the hard work is done i'm guessing.

SORN until you want to use it, limited mileage insurance etc will help to keep future costs under control. i have limited off road space for SORNing so i use some parking app thing and it costs me less to rent spaces locally than it would to keep the cars taxed and at my home

I very much think you have jumped the gun here Vinno. Keep the Coop. I was in the same frame of mind when I turned 60 four years ago. For several reasons I chose to have my Coop refurbished, at some expense I tell you, but I'm in a good place that I could afford to do this. My beastie is back tucked up in my garage, due to surgery it will have to stay there 'till I'm in a position I can drive again, but my main point here is the Coop is the only car I have ever owned that made me feel this way, & throughout this forum I'm not alone with my thoughts.

I have a daily driver, the Coop comes out to play when needed. Life's too short Vinno, do the right thing, you know it makes sense.. driving

They do get in your blood in a way that modern cars don't, I struggle to tell the difference in modern offerings form Ford, Renault, Citroen etc.
You can tell how hard they are to leave by how many of us come back to them.

Its all about how you feel when your coupe has gone!

Finding them isn't easy. And "bargain" coupes are a thing of the past. And who wants the expense of a bargain one anyhow?

I know that there are plenty who use there coupes as daily's but-if you can keep it as a special car and enjoy it when time allows!

You will miss her if she goes...

Mariner is right!
after a while these cars get under your skin,In 2014 I was going to sell my coupe after buying a new car but I could not bring myself to sell it because it has been with me from new.

This year we will be celebrating 21 years together..WOW

You will know when/if it’s right....

I sold mine in November last year - 15 years of ownership.

Yet I still come back here. Make of that what you will!!!!

I know how you feel and would find it hard to imagine life without a Coupe.

I know what you mean about the sharp brakes on the Fiesta shocked I drive the works pool car now and again and feel like I'm going to go through the windscreen until I get used to them laugh

I think you may regret it selling. I did but luckily I had the opportunity to buy it back 2 years later and doubt I will be without my coupe any time soon.

Many modern cars for me lack charisma, emotion or connection, the Coupe is one that provides me with all three.

Well I can't say that I am surprised at this response laugh

I have decided to get rid of the Fiesta for reasons other than "not wanting to sell the Coupe". I should never have bought the thing in the first place - you live and learn I suppose rolleyes

The Coupe does need some work doing to be honest and I'm still deciding what to do about that - it's such a hard decision! How can we be so attached to bits of metal stuck together? lol.

I just trawled through Pistonheads looking at every car manufacturers offerings and found zero cars that I actually *want*. The coupe has ruined my car-buying life forever laugh

I know someone who has suffered FC loss trauma after selling their FC. He just keeps changing his car every year or so and can no longer settle on anything. Most concerning!

Like many here, I've had my Coop for yonks - since 2003 (2nd owner) and yes I've had to invest in it to keep those years pushed back - but... my good lady and I see as a lifetime member of the family so it's not going anywhere. Plus my son has his eyes on it some time in the (hopefully distant) future.

Some cars just get under your skin and that's the end of it.

Carry on enjoying it Vinno - you know you want to !

I really do miss my Coupé and often entertain thoughts of regret for letting it go. I still really like the Coupé but I can't ever see me returning with another.
