Wish Me Luck - 09/03/2021 19:11
Hi everyone, back again after being without for 10years, will be treking across country this weekend to look at a couple of 20v vis's. Can't wait to get my hands around that meaty steering wheel again and bring back those memories
Cheers

Good luck. If you want to talk VIS I'm all ears.

Thanks! Is there anything I need to be aware of on the vis engine?

Re: Wish Me Luck - 10/03/2021 11:56
Mechanically they are much the same but they have a few 'exclusive' aspects which result in a lot of 'all models except the VIS' comments when looking at tuning/electrical parts etc. They have slightly more modern (insomuch as anything 20yrs+ is modern) electrics and some say they are more reliable as result.
They are good, very torquey, free revving and fun. They are definitely a lot cheaper than a turbo and probably cheaper to run, some parts seem to be more readily available eg radiators than the turbo.

Re: Wish Me Luck - 10/03/2021 13:29
Yep. The ECU is different so you can't just 'chip' it but overall the VIS is great as it's got a few more refinements over the standard NA. There are stories of the VIS (plastic inlet) unit failing but not had any problems with mine. The MAF seems sensitive so any rough running or loss of top end could mean a new MAF. Luckily these are much cheaper than the older MAFs (assuming you can still get them).
They are not particularly fast, but you can rev the nuts off them and have fun. Not too bad on fuel either.

Do the non turbos have a gearbox dipstick? Because I couldn't find it on the last one I looked at.

Re: Wish Me Luck - 12/03/2021 12:02
No I don't think the NAs have one.

Ok thanks!

And no fuel filter (at least not one you can change) and no throttle cable either.

Re: Wish Me Luck - 13/03/2021 08:54
I wondered why there was no plastic cover at rear, good stuff less to maintain. One other thing is that one of the coop's I'm looking at tomorrow hasn't had a cambelt for 9 years should I be worried about driving it home or is it like playing Russian roulette!

Re: Wish Me Luck - 13/03/2021 10:24
Ooerr - tricky one. What distance back to your HA and cost it up for a trailer? You spend a few k on the Coupe then it snaps on the way home (prob unlikely but who knows) and that will kill your love affair with the car right from the start. Alternatively spend a few 100 to trailer to a coupe friendly garage to get it done pronto. Or if you have a mechanic mate take them along for a thorough inspection and opinion but ultimately it's your shout. Good luck

Re: Wish Me Luck - 13/03/2021 12:32
I drove mine back from the highlands of Scotland during Storm Doris with no belt change evidence in the 19 years previous to that point although I did inspect the belts as best I could and they seemed in good nick. She performed admirably.

Ok cheers guys.

Re: Wish Me Luck - 13/03/2021 17:19
Point to remember: the belt is under maximum stress when you're accelerating - i.e. when the belt has acceleration loads as well the normal valve spring loads to cope with.
That said - the 20 belt is much wider (= stronger) than the 16 belt. From what I've seen over the years here, a 20 belt is unlikely to break unless an auxiliary belt snaps and gets tangled in the works - which will kill it every time. So check the condition of the aircon and alternator belt too!

How did you get on, Sheep’s?
Been thinking about your Coupe buying today whilst pottering on my mg tf.
Used to have a Vis back in the day.
Green she was. Lovely sound.
Hope you bought one.

Re: Wish Me Luck - 15/03/2021 13:36
Excellent! I love my VIS, its probably been the most reliable car I've owned overall (fingers crossed) . Had it 16 years and it'd be the one I'd keep if push came to shove
Enjoy!

I cannot for the life of me load the images, as I only have my phone at the moment. Is there a way of attaching them?
Posted By: DaveG
Re: Wish Me Luck - 16/03/2021 20:44
Press the "Use Full Editor" button (bottom right-ish) then click on "Attachment Manager" link, then press "Select a file to attach" and using whatever "file / photo manager" app you have on your phone, select the picture you want, repeat for additional pics.
Note that pics are limited to 2Mb each so you may need to resize first.

Select a file?

Re: Wish Me Luck - 17/03/2021 08:33
Yes, just select the file, then it should go back to the "select afile to attach" box and after a short while your uploaded pic file name should appear, add more or press ok

Looks in fab condition, congratulations. Taken the engine out already, that's brave!
Welsh/South West meet up on the cards once we're allowed out to play again, seems to be a few more of us active lately.

He's in great condition just got a few little jobs to do, full machine polish, couple of little touch ups, headlights refurb, oil/filter change, brake fluid, swap exhaust with my sisters (too loud for me)he's good to go.
