The ideal coupe - 18/05/2021 16:35

I was sat thinking (scary prospect) if only, what fiat did right and wrong with the coupe, the coupe is a GT car as far as I can see...

So why did Fiat never make an Automatic, a daily coupe 20vt with an automatic gearbox would be ideal, has anyone ever attempted to put a modem automatic gearbox in one?

I can't see that was ever in the pipeline as they stopped making them so soon, actually abandoning the idea of this class of vehicle. AFAIK it wasn't until the more recent 124 Spider (2016) that they restarted thinking along those lines.

Oddly this was offered with a 6-speed automatic box.

The 124 Spider was aimed largely at an older, more discerning (lazy?) clientelle, and being sold in the US as well, and being based on the MX5 ND...it was available in auto as well as manual (even on the margibally "hotter" Abarth version. There were a lot of unsold autos in the UK in the early years, whilst in the US it was hard to find any manuals...

Search for 'Fiat Coupé DSG' on YouTube.

Were any of the Tipo, the Kappa, or the Bravo/a available with auto boxes?

The 2.4 Stilo had the Selespeed as an option. Bet it wouldn't be too hard to get the drivetrain into a coupe

I suspect physically it would fit, the electrical aspect would be a challenge as i know that there are all sorts of integrations with doors, position switches, brake switches, TPS, then some type of dash integration as well.
With anything, with enough time money and skill it could be done, but it probably wouldn't be worth doing!

I was thinking about engine compatibility... According to Wiki, the Kappa was available with a 4-speed auto, and that ought to drop straight in...

Be really interesting to see if one could be done. I think modern traffic fits best with an auto and as you said probably more so with a GT.

The benefit of the selespeed is the paddles so you have control over changes. But I take the above point on integration. I can't imagine it'd be all that hard to work out what's making it tick - I shouldn't think there would be much network traffic for the gearbox given the age of the tech. Perhaps some of the Vito inputs are simple switch inputs? Failing that replace the ecu with something standalone. Maybe a DIY approach with one of the available standalone micro controller boards?

Hmmm... I've been programming for forty years, and I'd still be leery of trying to interface a modern gearbox controller into an older car. It's not impossible, but there's a lot of CANBUS traffic going on and I'd want an awful lot of info before I started. The entire systems are very deeply integrated - to the point where a lot of components on a current vehicle won't even run without having been introduced properly to the rest of the system - which is tricky if the rest of the system is not there...

I strongly suspect that the Kappa boxes will have tiny amounts of integration, if any (though I seem to recall that there's an entry in one of the ECU memory locations that flags the presence of an auto box - but not in the 20vt version).
