Looks good for an abandoned car.

Anyone local enough to intercede? Will it face any likelihood of vandalism if people observe is been left unloved?

I'm on the case MM, no reply yet from the chap that sold it to the present owner, and I'm still forging back north after a visit to Leeds!

Fingers crossed this unloved coupe can be saved.

Hello - I believe someone on the thread (Edinburgh?) spoke to one of my colleagues this morning re: the Coupe - it's been in that spot since August 2021, alongside a 90's Rover and Citroen you would have passed on the way.

It's rotated around various spots in the neighbourhood over the last 4 years, along with a selection of other vehicles of a similar vintage, presumably owned by the same person.

pic1
pic2 (lurking in the background)

I understand attempts by the local residents and the landlord to identify the owner have failed, and while various notes have been left on the vehicles over the last year, it's now sporting a more official looking Edinburgh Council removal notice.

Police are unlikely to be involved, as abandoned cars are the responsibility of the local authority.

The Council note gives 15 days notice from from 16/2 before it's moved. Not sure what happens after that, but reference to the "Refuse Disposal Act" on the note is ominous.

May be worth you contacting the Street Enforcement team - if the owner hasn't been in contact, next steps seem to lie with them ...

Astonishing!

It was indeed myself down on location, and I moved on back to Ocean Terminal in case there were any loose ends to tie up, which there weren't. From there, Leith police station but as you say there was nothing "of concern" on their records - the cop did direct me to the council rooms above Newkirkgate shopping centre at the bottom of Leith Walk but those investigations turned out to be fruitless.

So yes, this is still very much in the hands of Street Enforcement whose offices appear to be manned by cardboard cutouts as they don't reply to emails (either internal or from me) and there is no phone number rolleyes

All I have been able to do therefore is to leave a couple of notes on the car and with the office it is parked outside (probably how you found out about it IamLono). Perhaps Street Enforcement will deign to get back at some stage.

There is certainly one interested party up here but there is the issue of keys....

@adam16vt - this coop has Autosportivo all over it (plates and airfreshener) so I am assuming Antz dealt with both this and the T527 sprinty. Oddly I cannot get hold of either him or the business...

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 01/03/2022 15:04

Maybe I'm off, but is it the office's ground that it's parked on and if so could a request be made by the land owner to Dvla under reasonable grounds to find the car's owner?

Good luck with the Council - may be worth trying to go through the main switchboard to see if by some miracle you can get through?

Looking at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/abandoned-vehicles-council-responsibilities, and assuming this guidance is relevant to Scotland, once they've moved the car they've got to give the owner 7 days written notice (presumably via the DVLA?) as it's got plates/was taxed at one point.

I suppose the owner may choose to pay to get it back, then the cycle potentially starts all over again.

Or they auction it, keys or no keys, somewhere like John Pye out at Bo'ness - they seem to handle seized cars/repossessions/etc.

Would they crush it if someone thought there was a few quid in it?

It's a coop it must have been to a garage in the last 4yrs, are there any specialists up there who might know it?

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 01/03/2022 18:49

That's a good point, I'll try Harrison Motors as well as McLennans, although it's not had an MOT since Feb 2018....

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 02/03/2022 15:30

I've now traced the enforcement officer who placed the order on the windscreen!

The 15-day period expires tomorrow shocked

IamLono, did you know that the owner of this car (as told to us by a chequered gentleman) was a keen photographer, often seen around Leith? And that he had been reported missing a few years ago, then found?

Yes, my colleague relayed!

I retraced some of my old steps when I was halfheartedly trying to track down ownership myself last year, this chap on Flickr (who has photographed the collection over the years) appears to know the owner (see comments) ...

https://flic.kr/p/2keco8x

... as does his friend (note "missing" as per your comment) ...

https://flic.kr/p/2hx1AZD

... perhaps another avenue.

Good heavens, only 15 mins before you posted this our most northerly UK Fiat Coupé based in Stronsay messaged us with the very same link laugh

It seems that "redxjs" has a reputation for having a lot of abandoned cars in various waterfront locations...

Good sleuthing!

That brown XJS was parked up where the Coupe is now for a few weeks last year. A a slew of cars I recognise in that feed.

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 03/03/2022 14:26

I have had a reply from the Enforcement Officer concerned, as follows:

The last registered keeper for the Fiat has been in touch to advise the vehicle is not abandoned, therefore we will not be removing it.

Due to data protection I am unable to share the contact details for the last registered keeper with you.

I would suggest placing a note on the vehicle should you wish them to get in touch with you.

Sorry I cannot assist further at this time.

I've replied to thank her for her assistance and that we will probably not be pursuing our search as the implication is the owner doesn't want to part with it. However he is not going to make himself more friends by leaving his vehicle(s) around the back yards of others...

Case closed!

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 03/03/2022 20:33

Thanks for the update. That's a result for the owner, but a bit of a downer for the local residents' association.

I can only think he leads a charmed lifestyle, is somehow privileged or knows too many people in high places to be able to get away with this.

I was really enjoying this thread, shame there wasn't a happy ending. Maybe we'll get another series, trusty Inspector Edinburgh touring around in his classic car 'endevouring' to get to the bottom of a perplexing riddle that only he could solve, all we need is a slightly incompetent sidekick.

Gosh, you make me sound like Rebus laugh

I'm glad to say I am surrounded by a Scottish contingent who are invaluable in their contributions and abilities smile

It was a bit of a damp squib ending yes, but I have this funny feeling it's not the last time we hear of it....

Dare we say: the Leith police dismisseth us?

Only the fogies will know where that originated!

Re: Abandoned coupe in Leith - 15/03/2022 18:22

The plot thickens...

Yesterday I found out from a local member that his wife had traced an Instagram chappie who had taken several pics of T529, and from there had sent a message to someone she suspected might be the owner - she's now received a reply from aforesaid apparent owner suggesting that "he was selling but everything has a price" shocked

And today - cleaning up outside after last evening's meet trip (it would rain after a sunny morning rolleyes )
a traffic warden pootled up the street on a scooter and stopped opposite me, dismounted (oh gawd I thought what's he after) and came over.....
"Do you know the Shore?" he says (area of Edinburgh around Leith and the coast)
Yes, I think I know what you're going to say..
"A blue one of these, been sitting there for ages, flat front tyre..."
Yup, and back, I say...

I cannot believe this guy (he lives down that way) took the trouble!
