Owned my Coupe for 23 yrs, but....ULEZ sabotage.

Owned my Coupe for 23 yrs, but....ULEZ sabotage. - 14/03/2022 14:55

I just found my original welcome letter :D, and turns out I bought it in the Fiat Garage that used to be in Chertsey, Surrey in March 1999.
So only one owner, from new (anybody else?). And it's been super reliable for me. But now, disaster. I semi-unwittingly moved 2 roads inside the expanded ULEZ.
Now costs me £12.50 to simply drive it a couple of hundred metres down the road to get on the motorway. Ouch. (Thanks mr mayor, appreciated).
Thought there might be a way to sneak in & out, but they've done a great job on the cameras. Because this is all ca$h in the bank for them.
Anyway, having lurked here for a while, thought I might take some steps to maybe ensure it gets passed onto an enthusiast. My loss will definitely be someone's gain.
Hope it's OK to use up some posts to get to the 5 posts that opens up some more options.
Also just wondered if any other owners here are similarly being sabotaged by ULEZ?

Can you find a garage or parking place just outside ULEZ? Trouble is, the ULEZ might eventually expand to all of Greater London...

Yup; I can at least park a coupe on my drive here but I can't take it into central Berlin or Potsdam.

Though with petrol at 2.20 Euros a litre at the moment, it might just be stopping in the barn.

unfortunately not, as it's all controlled parking zones just outside the boundary too. had a tour out and it's surprising how far that extends.
it would literally mean taking a train to pick up the car. which kinda defeats the object laugh

interesting thing is i never used it to drive into London. only to get out onto the motorway. but the charge for doing that 30 seconds or so is the same as someone driving hundreds of polluting miles all across London from 12.01am to 11.59pm on the same day. so if i move it, i might as well now drive all over london and make a day of it. bonkers.
it's also funny that TFL were relying on more people getting charged. they'd already factored that juicy chunk of cash into all their budgets. they're now complaining that people were more compliant than expected, = less charging/fines, so they've not got as much cash to work with as they'd hoped.

fun part is getting the timing wrong. so paying £12.50, then getting delayed and say coming back at 5 mins past midnight, have to stump up another £12.50. lovely stuff.

all this is such a shame - cos the coupe is running beautifully.
but at least i didn't scrap it. hopefully somebody else now gets to enjoy how well it's been looked after.

Shame you have to sell your Coupe due to 'external forces' but at least you've had many, many years of owning, driving & enjoying it. Hope you manage to find a new owner who will look after it as much as yourself.

after service + MOT + road tax & insurance for another year + resident's parking permit + ULEZ charges, might have been simpler and wiser to use the scrappage scheme.
but a bit ludicrous to trash a classic car that's running well. so i'm glad i didn't do that in the end.
the coupe's been one of my most reliable friends over the years, so there will be a tear or two when it finally departs.
would be good for the soul if it found its way into the hands of someone here.
