Body repair - 12/09/2022 19:48

Does anyone have or know of some good pics/diagrams of the panels involved in the rear sills/floor/wheel tubs? I've got the ones from eper and from the manual already.

Need to investigate some rust

Robin check out this Ink black Plus project on my FB page, there you can see where I've opened up the rear sill to repair some previous poor repairs.

You're a gent! Absolutely what I was looking for.

Looks like water has wicked in from somewhere into the quarters and while mine has never been welded I suspect it'll need some now. I'd hoped that the sill was a bit simpler inside laugh

Common for water to get into the outer sills via the kick plate locating holes, it can then pass to the inner sill along with further water passing the Pinifarina badge pins, they should have been surface mounted from factory imo, would have saved many examples rotting away.

Unfortunately my sills require attention as well. Rust has appeared near the kick plates both sides. My Coupe is getting attention as we speak and I’ll pick it up later today. My painter has told me it will need new sills in the not too distant future, I’m having a quick job done at the moment. My wife is quite annoyed at the money I’m spending on the car at the moment, she hasn’t minded in the past but hey ho.

It's either spend it for looking after your car Jim, or waste it by paying taxes to Inland Revenue..!

Ach MM, she’ll come around, it’s my only vice, I don’t smoke, I don’t frequent pubs. Thing is we are very open about money everything goes into one pot. When I was working I could squirrel away money here and there on expenses etc, but any money now shows up on her phone. phone She did pay for the refurbishment of the Coupe working full time for a couple of years, then part time, now she has retired a couple of weeks ago. I just feel guilty sometimes.

Take her out in the car for a blast around some of your fantastic scenery up there- that should impress her!

Which reminds me of the only two times a man opens a car door for his wife these days: (a) new car; (b) new wife...

Thought you had spent a shed load on a resto Jim no wonder the missus is peeved......these cars do require constant attention to keep them tip top. Mine is still good paint wise as I have had the roof, bonnet etc done and it has the boot floor seam done and a few other bits like new wings.....I was going to bite the bullet and throw a load at it to get it assessed and then made mint; I have come to the conclusion that I won't now be doing that, the Coupe lives outside and always has and does about 1500miles max a year, I have decided I will attend to the bits that crop up then as and when such time as it needs the £££ big work I have rationalised that as I have already had 18 yrs out of her....she will go. It will be my decision and thankfully not linked into ULEZ and other such political shite.

Hello Submariner

Your comments above could not have been better timed.

MOT and annual service booked in for the end of the month.
Fortnight later, it's cambelt.

Exhaust is looking in need of replacement, suspension getting rusty, driver's side below Pininfarina bubbling, Aircon has never worked.

Your suggestion to attend to things when necessary and not chase perfection has helped me enormously.

Thanks

Paul

Re: Body repair - 02/10/2022 20:33

Any way to easily inspect the area below the side mounted Pininfarina badges? I have no idea if anything is bad inside there, but i can see the badges are not sticking well lol, so im worried.

And one thing is for sure about Rust, it needs to be treated as fast as possible before it makes to much havoc.

Its my biggest concern about these cars.

It just went through what is equal to MOT here and also its had rust protection treatments multiple times in the past, but its not going to make it fail proof with these cars i know.

That'd be one h*** of a job if you meant the outside 3/4 panels!

Re: Body repair - 03/10/2022 10:53

Paul,

Get the mot done...and delay the service? Get that done along with cambelt...hopefully lowering the price of doing them as two separate service-as a "while your in there"????

Easy to feel guilty about not having a "perfect" machine. But the other things you mentioned...

Exhaust won't be too hard to sort...and many say custom units can be subtle and give a OEM+ sound and bit better feel tot he car.

A/C.....constant battle to keep them running. Mine remains ice cold the last 3 years.....but took around 5 years constant issues before that. At previous coupe meets i have been to most cars even the very best cars had issues with non working a/c.......am leaving well alone at moment as its working.

Suspension....some new rubber/track rod ends/bushes can improve before you pull the trigger on the more expensive parts?

With the average household fighting just to feed itself and stay warm this winter....the practical coup' owner has to be shrewd, and self controlled over what does and does not "need" to be done on their cars.

Anyone with a coupe who has it taxed, mot'd. serviced and on the road with a list of "things to do" is doing pretty bloody well in my book.

We all need to fee a bit proud that we are doing our best to keep them on the road!

Re: Body repair - 03/10/2022 13:34

yes. coupe ownership is a hefty one. takes its toll. my plus is my dailey which is the best way to keep them really cars dont do well just sat and left after some time. ill do whatever it takes for my baby. i dont "need" to change my 02 sensor, cts and thermostat, radiator or the pcv valve on the inlet manifold but its all future proofing.

my clutch pedal went a day before the mot, just the pedal, it took 2 mechanics an entire day to change the clutch master and slave, it was a nasty kick in the nuts with the bill for 513 quid evil

mot...didnt anything doing expect emissions "cheating"....running a 3 inch decat and stage 3 hybrid, not to mention the 200 quid the week before for the service, or the 100 and something the week before that! for rocker gasket, plug and oil change
only had it since march

Thanks for all the comments.
Reading other people's views and experiences is very helpful.

I've always been happy to listen to advice, review it with regards to my needs and budget, then make decision.

Re: Body repair - 03/10/2022 19:58

Okay, will be a task for when the car is going to be stored for the winter. I need to make sure these are OK and find a way to make sure no water gets in there at the badges on the side. Car just had a repair at the front side fender since water leaked down and made it rust from the inside, previous owner fixed this and its been quite the work. I need some respray done due to this and might as well find all area's that could need sorting and get them fixed prior to this, not sure if its going to just need a full outside only respray in the end. But as someone else mentions in this post, with current world situation its hard to justify spending like 2k on a respray. Just need to make sure the car is not rotting away somewhere.
