Coupe lost me a job...(or saved my life?)

Coupe lost me a job...(or saved my life?) - 01/10/2006 01:53

Looking to move on and up in the business and went for interview with a big Dublin law firm...

Interview started well with the head man insisting on calling me only by my surname and declining to give his..'My name isn't doesn't matter to you, I'm a very important man in the firm, you'll find out my name if we decide to hire you...!'

No chairs in the interview room..candidates were supposed to stand and face the panel..yeah right..this candidate sat on the window sill. This was a senior staff job paying serious money..
Went through the whole thing knowing full well that I'd rather be on welfare than work for this crowd. Final questions were about client relationships and visits..

'You have a company car...?'

'Nope, the tax rules make it far cheaper to use my own car and claim expenses...'

'Oh so you pay tax?..My accountant is pretty good..not paid anything for 5 years.' Pitying smile.

'What do you drive now? Killer question.

'And your company allows you to visit clients in a 10 year old car? Very lax. Our image wouldn't allow it. We insist as a condidtion of employment that our staff have vehicles under 3 years old. You'd not even be allowed to bring that blue chariot of yours into the staff carpark'.

At that point I got up off window sill and terminated the interview..

'I've met you before..I'm sure..Your name is Sole??

'No..'

'Sure it is..Ronnie Sole..R Sole to his mates.

Then I left. I've also written to the Law Society of Ireland to complain about their interview technique.

Wrong Title. Should have been "Last night a Coupe saved my life".

Herself is in HR/Management/Recruiting and apparently this is a popular new American interview technique to see how far the candidates can be pushed and where they finally bite. If she's right then I'll be offered the MD slot!

Jesus how much better the world would be if you could legally lay out a t0sser like that. All these non-natural laws serve nothing other than letting people attempt to treat others as scum.

But then, if that is really what was said, I'd have well been up for the verbal slagging match... and then released the camphone video on the internet.

Anyway, so are they still interviewing for that position?

It has to be a test, doesn't it?!

One that I'd say you'd passed, until the Mr Sole part

I struggle to believe that can be true unless they were deliberatly testing you. Will be interested to hear if they get in contact with you or not

Got feedback on it..good interview skills apparently until I blew it with the shoe leather comment. The HR guy said they like to put potential employees under stress to see how they react..like in a courtroom. In 10yrs of Court appearances (staff, not the accused) I've never had a cross examination like that one..

Of course it was a test - but it also says volumes about the type of company they are. i.e. Arrogant and aggressive. I have been through interview processes that are similar but not as extreme, and been offered the job. Incredibly statifying to say that you'd rather work for a company that is not quite so up their own A*ses at that stage.

Agreed. I've never had to face one, but I hate the whole idea of those fake-but-fashionable interview styles: They really do say everything that you need to know about a company, don't they?

I also worked for a company that gave a car allowance on the basis the car was less than 5 years old...

This policy was never enforced though as one of the directors often turned up for work in a E Type !!

Law firms do have a reputation for being 'old fashioned' at interview... U r better off with a forward thinking company me thinks - good luck!

Re: Coupe lost me a job...(and its all true).long post - 02/10/2006 21:00

absolutely. Two biggest things I look for when I'm interviewed:

1. Get interviewed by someone senior - if you dont gel with them then you wont gel with the company as a whole. personalities are 'infectuous' in the workplace - particularly in smaller companies.

2. Have a quick look round the office - arrive early and ask where the bathroom is to do so. Is it tidy - what kind of atmosphere is there, people smiling etc.

I've always found it's more about 'gut feel' than the facts an interviewer can sell you on.
