Alternatives to the coupe?

Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 17:51

Can anyone think of an alternative to the coupe:

must haves:- styling, power, exclusivity, price, 4 seats, decent(ish) size boot etc and the following of course.

In short - No I can't unless you want a Scoob or EVO. I'm assuming that you dont want to step up to an RS4 / RS6

Nope, there isn't anything - nearest in my eyes are the Alfa GT - too expensive & the GTV - no space!

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:11

the GTV was my thought but as you say much smaller that the coupe.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:12

Tiny boot and rear seats only suitable for someone with no legs or under 5 years old.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:15

GTV
E36 M3
944 S2 or Turbo
Elan Turbo
200SX
Corrado VR6
Integra Type-R

Ok some are 2 seaters but hey.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:17

not as fast as teh coupe (anywhere near) but lots of low end torque in the 2.7 v6 hyundai coupe.

personally i love the styling as well and may be my next car (still a step down tho).

dunno what i will go for next if its not the hyundai.....

cant afford a 350z/RX8/New shape Audi TT/Alpha.

wish you could get RHD mustangs!.

Hyundai coupe - is this a wind up?

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:21

no, looks wise i really like it (infact i think it has certain coupe similarities), its fairly solid, cheap and whilst i am only guessing there MUST be a way of getting more out of that monster engine!.

350z/RX8/New shape Audi TT/Alpha.

maybe but all above my pay scale (and not a fan of the old shape TT).

love the looks of the Z4 but they are way expensive and hardly practical - and not what hte OP is interested in)

would be good the stick with Chris Bangle tho if you went the Z4 route.

indeed, and that will also be an option IF i decide to go the hot hatch route, but the Cupra isnt really a coupe its kind of in the 307/focus/Stylo category.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 18:38

maybe saving up for an Integrale is the answer!!! \:o

For when 2 become 3

I would seriously be considering one of these.

It fails on your criteria except it's got 4 seats, oh and maybe the boot.

The 3 door civic hatch is fugly.

A guy on my road has one and it looks as if Chris Bangles evil twin designed it after having all his limbs removed.

The 4 door looks great though imo.

Only thing half tidy(ish) is the 406 Coupe v6, But In std form - Nothing is as fast or prestige as the Fiat Coupe 20vt..

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 26/07/2007 20:59

Hmm, its a tough choice. The Alfa GT might be the logical replacement for a coupe as its Italian, got decent handling, looks good, and is super practical with a mammoth boot.

During the darkest days of coupe unreliability I've also been tempted by the likes of an Audi S3. Went to drive one and its almost as fast as the coupe, has a great image and probably is as fast round bends in the wet as the coupe is in the dry. On the downside though its just a bit souless to drive and the sound just can't compare to the coupe.

Needless to say I still have the coupe but will consider both when I come to change.

How about an E36 M3GT, they are relatively scarce. \:\)

Yup, I looked at both of these, and ended up with the Celica of course. The Prelude is available in a quite nice Motegi special (UK car), with a quite nice body kit and all the toys.
I think many of them were bought by older owners and companies, so less likely to have been thrashed.

A bit older, but a mint UK Celica GT4 is quite nice from the outside and they can certainly be tuned to shift along quickly.

How about a Mitsi 3000GT/GTO? I looked at these, but running costs looked a bit scary.

Focus RS? Maybe a bit too much money still?

Lastly, I still really like the Ford Puma Racing, and they tick many of your boxes. These are certainly exclusive, although not that quick in a straight line. Rear passenger room is tight too. My ex Fiance has a 1.7 normal Puma and it was great fun to drive.

I'll agree with Dave there - they're pretty good fun! \:D Gearbox is awesome.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 00:30

Things I considered when getting the Coupe were....

Audi S3?
Calibra Turbo?
Celica GT4?
Supra Turbo?
Skyline?
Lancer Evo?
Scooby STI?

But none of them have the extra something the Fiat Coupe has. \:#

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 00:46

I would go for a 300zx (had one and loved it but VERY HARD to find a good one now \:mad\: ) or an S14 200sx \:\) , my S13 was the best fun to drive but the interior had NO soul \:\( . I may also look for a GT4 but I dare say they've all had very hard life's and I could never trust a Calibra T.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 00:55

If your only looking at spending 'coop' money then stick with the the coop.
If i replace my coop i'm going to have to add about 10k to what i sell the coop for to buy something thats a suitable replacement.
I'd want to get in the car & instantly feel yeah this is a step up from the coop.
I do like what some of the jap cars can do, but when it comes to style stick with the europeans especially Italian cars.
Scooby who styled that ? Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles

Slower but I think quite cool:

Classic Saab 900 Turbo 16 Valve / Convertible

I had one for a few months and it was great fun, old skool turbo lag and reasonably tuneable. Mine had over 200,000 miles on it and was mechanically spot on!!

Anyone driven a Monaro VXR? I'd like to know how they compare to the coupe, and they should come down below £10k in a few years.....

not sure I like the interior though, reminds me of a vectra \:s

Seems you cant beat the Coupe for all these things (much more car for less money than anything in its class) thats why we love it so much.

Monaro VXR \:s Are you kidding?

It's a monster, i have no doubt it would slaughter a standard coupe.

It's barely out of the showroom ;), can't see it coming down to anywhere under 10K for years yet!!

I like the look from the outside, just not inside \:s

Here's my list of the closest:
Integra Type R (too 'hard' and 'revvy')
FD RX7 (Too expensive to run and small rear seats/boot)
Nissan S15 Silvia (too expensive, currently)
Lancia Growler (LHD only, and getting on now °()
Focus RS (Too expensive)

Lots of other cars tick 3 or 4 of your boxes but none imo tick all of them. TBH I can't think of anything that does? Even if you drop the price requirement what is there for £50k that does it all?

Monaro VXR is the only one I can think of...

BMW 8 series?
NOT cheap to run, but oh so sexy.

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 18:23

My next car would probably be the Alfa GT Coupe or the 159 if the wife insists on a 4 door \:\(
Posted By: JimO

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 18:27

The alfa Gt is a good comprimise against the coop, not as fast, but no slouch, just as good looking outside, better inside and just as rare. And as I am finding out, coming down in price now :P(
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 18:53

For similar money Alfa GTV V6, very tempted with the Nissan 350zx, lot more $$....but my coupe makes me smile everytime I get in it!

Re: Alternatives to the coupe? - 27/07/2007 21:21

i am gonna break the mold and suggest a renualt avantime 3.0 V6.
like the coop they are a love or hate car... google images one and you will see what i mean.

I am a big fan of the Avantime, not sure I'd call it an alternative to the Coupe, nice and rare though.

Clio V6, maybe?

The replacement has got to look different from other cars on the road, but stand out for the right reasons.

thats why i choose the avantime... styling, power, exclusivity, price, 4 seats, decent(ish) size boot etc

No, £15k is going to buy you one of the earlier 5.7s, probably pre-facelift and around 2004 vintage but you might possibly get one that's had the cosmetic updates added for that money.

A 6.0 VXR will still be north of £20k still at the moment depending on age/mileage. There are still a few pre-regs about for £26-£27k, usually with < 1000 miles, although you'll not get a black one for that

Vectra interior? Not IMO...... \:P
