Does your Coupe feel fast?

Posted By: Lucifer

Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 13:58

I just went out at lunchtime in the car with a couple of workmates, and we got stuck behind a tractor doing 15mph in a national speed limit road. At the first available safe opportunity for passing I booted it from second, only up to 60mph, but it terrified all 3 passengers to such an extent that they all giggled like little girls for the whole 10 minutes afterwards.

Now to me, the Coupe doesn't feel all that quick any more. Is it just because I'm used to it, or is it because I was the driver and not a passenger?

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 14:03

Yup - I'm very used to the performance of my Coupe now - feels quick, but ordinary at the same time

However, I took a colleague out in it a couple of months ago and set it to base boost so I dodn't scare her too much

On one occasion, I had to put my foot down a bit (slip road onto DC - decent gap appeared so I floored it)

She went silent and a little bit pale - didn't have the heart to tell her it was on its lowest setting

i think after time you just get used to the power. I still make people squeak abit in my car even though they have been in it a few times. Let someone drive you in your car and you will notice the difference from being a driver to a passenger.

I don't think mine feels particularly fast, so much so I've been thinking about GTECing it even though I told myself I never would.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 14:15

Too true, Dan_S

I've always said that 0-60 in 6 secs is quick enough for anyone. It is amazing how blase(can't figure out how to put an accent thingy above the "e") we all get about the performance which, even by modern car standards, is impressive.

I'm picking up a fella (no not like that) on Thursday morning for run from Belfast to Derry. (Migrating a load of folk onto a new mail server)

Anyway its a good 150 mile round trip and I imagine the temptation to show off a little of the coops performance will prove to much for me.

i was thinking the same afew months back, must be use to it.. had me lass in tears one day.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 14:36

When i first got mine i couldnt believe the power i was scared sh1tless when the guy took me for a spin. At times im sure it feels faster than other times.
Perhaps it depends on how much of an open road is in front to judge it.
Funny enough i just give her a quick little push couple of days ago and my Mother and Aunt...lol Went .........Wow

What you guys need to do is buy a 90bhp diesel hatchback and use it for commuting to work 5 days a week.

Everytime i get back into the Fiat at weekends and the occasional work day it feels like a supercar laugh

I Took my Dad out for a "spirited" drive once.

He didn't flinch or say anything at the time.

I then asked him if he enjoyed the acceleration and he said "It's not any faster than me rover lad" shocked

He has an old 416 !!

I honestly think that is what he believed at the time !!

I drive a 93BHP escort diesel as my daily driver. It's the opposite of the coupe - Great handling and pants performance. laugh

the misses has got a 1.1 fiat seicento sporting.......following her out last week.....she out accelerated me cry stupid clutch frown

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 15:49

i have a 60bhp punto im supposed to use, but i look at that then look at the coop, i always accidently end up going to work in the coop ....
I have been thinking the past few days that i want a bigger turbo and more power smile just used to mine now, but saying that i have scared myself a few time as i forgot how nippy it can be laugh

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 15:58

you get used to any power. i know a guy with a 690bhp gtr and he is bored stupid and just went to 920bhp and lets face it 690bhp and 0-60 in 4 seconds and 1/4 1n 11.6 is quick enough for anyone but he was bored. the coop feels quick to me for some strange reason as i have had much more powerful cars but i will be used to it very soon.

i think its a point where you either say enough is enough or you carry on to silly levels.

my uncle is at stupid stage as he just sold his new m5 because it was boring and slow! has a played with 4200gt grandsport now!
i wouldn't get bored with the new m5 for a while.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 16:10

M5's sound fantastic!
I personally think the 16vt feels quicker when both are around 250+ bhp. But yeah agreed you get used to the speeds.
I must say Coops feel quite Sluggish with 3 people in them.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 17:21

Mine feels quick at 1.5 bar of boost, certainly pulled away from a new shape s3 easy enough :-) thanks Flea.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 20:49

The first time I drove mine on a test drive before buying, I couldn't believe the acceleration in 2nd and 3rd. I floored it and just wasn't expecting the push back in the seat it provided laugh

I was ony used to a 1.8 Bravo but had driven the S2000, Audi TT and Golf VR6 on occassions. The S2000 was great, but the thrill of the turbo on thr 20VT beats them all.

Now 2 and a bit years later, I'm used to the coop. But it still suprises me occassionally! love I don't notice the push back in the seat as much but its definately still fast. Overtaking is just effortless at most speeds.

Its standard by the way (apart from B6's, Pagid pads and DBA discs) and I've no intention of modifying engine performance. I'd love more power but for me, it's perfect the way it is yipee

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 30/03/2009 23:50

My story is similar to most other peoples here. I had a problem with my PRV which meant I was only boosting at 0.7 bar. I didn't get round to fixing it for around a month

(I think there was a voice in my head somewhere saying 'you know how much money you save on petrol driving it like this jon....don't fix the prv.....if you don't you might be able to afford to fix the coop when it goes wrong next time.....and one day you might actaully be able to afford a house! laugh )

Fixed it the other day and went out for a drive boosting properly at 1.2bar. It felt silly in 1st and 2nd. Forgotten what a big smile it could provoke love

sod the house

thinking about it there were a couple of really cold nights this winter - empty roads - lovely dense air. That felt fast smile

I reckon like has been said - you can get used to anything - Jenson Button said his car felt slow all last season. jesus.

LOL @ peanut, I knew there would have to be a Skyline reference in here somewhere laugh

In answer to the question, yes mine still feels very rapid thumb

mine is as fast as this...

7 seconds is the turbo kicking in laugh

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 06:37

well my new (to me) plus is running like a dog so feels awfully slow - but a couple of sessions at motormech will sort that out....

my green 20vt i just got rid of felt stupidly quick when i first got it, frighteningly so. it was pretty much standard but for a gtec chip - once i had the suspension renewed it felt so quick and planted it was awesome.

now, i have to get this plus back to a good condition, so i expect to have some speed to look forward to in the near future, i hope.....

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 08:40

sorry lol there was also a m5 mentioning masserati to lol.

i think that power is very addictive so sometimes its good to find a car that you love for many other reasons then how fast it is and know it is fast but also have a tuning cap.
say a coop looks good and drives well but is kinda capped to 400bhp on worth while tuning so you can't take it to stupid.
buy a hot rod and you will end up with 1200bhp and a massive bill or deibt lol.

Put it this way, although i dont own a 20v turbo (yet) everytime im taken out in a 20vt im shocked by the difference, seriousely quick cars. the difference in performance between the 20vna and 20vt is crazy!
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 11:52

I haven't driven my coupe for a month and it's having a slightly bigger turbo put on. It's never been running perfect but. iv'e scared the hell out many girls in it laugh

Also my brother's description wen't a long the lines of...i was slammed back into my seat, everything was just a blur and i started to feel sickd laugh

Think that might make him a girl.

Been driving a ford ka, so damn im looking forward to it.

My mum hates getting in the car with me driving, i can usualy see where she has been gripping the seat laugh i think that i drive a little too fast too, i try not to but i just love the sound of the engine and the acceleration if it driving

Hmmm.... should be interesting when i get to drive mine. No more than 75bhp for the past 4 years, then into a 500bhp coupe, should make some interesting driving / scaring laugh

Very jealous laugh

Mine is standard and does not feel fast to me, however anyone who is a passenger tells me its really fast

Just a case of being used to it I guess!

You must have heard one with an aftermarket exhaust then! The E60 M5 I drove sounded a bit rough if I'm being honest, and no it wasn't faulty in any way! tongue Apparently that's the norm, and I wasn't overly impressed with the soundtrack.

It was a great car to drive though; effortlessly quick, thought in all honesty it never felt as fast as it was actually travelling (if that makes sense). Peanuthead, did your uncle seriously swap an M5 for a 4200 on the grounds he thought the M5 was too slow?! You can't mean an E60 surely, I know the 4200 is a fairly rapid car but there's no way it would live with the M5! tongue

Mine still feels fast although since I've only had it a few days I'm still getting used to it. I took my mate out in it and when I put my foot down in second, all I heard from him was a string of swearwords so I think it passed the test.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 16:07

he did indeed but he doesn't have a standard 4200gt he ha sa grandsport wich has more power but i think the main gripe wasn't so much with power although he did say it wasn't as fast has he would have liked but the handling and in his words "felt like a old boat!" so not good.

It's slow to me and I want more but a friend was screaming my name to slow down when I booted the 2nd and 3rd gears recently so I get more smiles scaring other's rather than myself.

I've gone from Fiat Tipo 1.6 Scioneri to Coupe 16VT, and it feels like I've gone from a bycicle to a Kawasaki Ninja laugh
Even my girlfriend (she has a Fiat Uno), said that the Coop is MAD....so....yeah it's quick.....it's even quicker now when I got it chiped evil

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 18:59

When i bought mine, when it was standard the turbo spun up and pushed me into my seat i enjoyed it, im used to it now even though its an extra 30 bhp it still doesnt seem as fast untill you drive another car that is supposed to be quick ish, when i borrowed my dads mk3 golf gti i thought it was broken it was that slow, and my mate said he wished his car felt like mine and he has my old supercharged vr6 but its a bit poorly.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 19:18

My 16v N/A is slower than my Alfa frown But sounds great thumb

Although when i go out in DanDan's sometimes it does amaze me how quick it is... though i am used to his driving now and we've been driving about in my coop alot more lately which is strange for him to let me drive laugh
(Not a bad driver)

Yesterday he was following me and we went over a roundabout onto a dual carriage way.. I was flooring it only to hear a roar of a 20VT come flying past frown

I won't tell him... but i am secretly jealous!

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 31/03/2009 20:19

When I got my coop first I thought it was bloody fast. Maybe I'm used to it but I'm now convinced my coupe is leaking boost, has a dodgy AFM or the PRV is set to 0.8!! I think it's paranoia.

however, I dropped it in this evening for a full service and health check and borrowed my dad's 1.6 Primera in the meantime. Geez...... now THAT CAR has no power at all!!!

Can't wait to get the coop back tongue
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 08:55

got the same paranoia daithi28!
my ~250hp coop feels slow for me now( same thing for 20vt`s in which i was a passenger recently. I hope new mods will sort it out)

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 09:22

a few weeks ago i was thinking the same, is there something a bit wrong with it?about 90% as fast as it was?
then i had a passatt estate diesel courtesy car...
got the coupe back, and it feels like iv sent it away and theyve given it 50 bhp.
feels realy fast again.
must just have gotten used to it.
most people when they get in and i drive away, the first word they say is "fccuk", ha ha.
as someone said before tho, some days cars feel slower, and some days they feel faster, weird.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 11:16

It is all down to what you're used to. My NA is slow in comparison to a 20vt, however there are times when it feels quick (although I'm talking 1st/2nd gear).
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 12:06

I tend to only go up to 4000rpm in each gear and it is plenty quick enough. When I put my foot right down it feels really quick, you can be a complete holigan in these cars.

I did that when I jumped in a 106 and when it started up I gave a puzzled face to a friend and gave it a little gas and it wasn't moving, I thought it was broken untill I felt the motion and it was slow.

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 14:34

i think the coop feels fast but what it lacks for me is sort of un nerving brute feeling. feels a bit to safe but on the otherhand a bit unstable to.
you know when you boot it it won't snake down the road or scramble in a hedge and normally just goes well but not that quick in 4th and 5th. handling again you know it won't likely kick the back end out to far although mine does a bit sometimes. or i don't feel like it will understeer in to a hedge but it also has to much bodyroll and not enough feel but loads of grip.
so in answer it feels quite quick but i still think driving pleasure could be improved.
Posted By: Tommy_Coop23

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 06/04/2009 16:56

LOL, so because it doesnt make you feel like you're going to crash, it diminishes the driving pleasure??

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 07/04/2009 08:38

well kinda actully lol. the fact it doesn't keep you on your toes and feels a little less hardcore does make it slightly less fun to drive.
problem is sometimes it does feel like it could crash but thats because of its rolly polly antics and not the fact its a beast and you have to harness the power lol

the Coupe isn't a 'beast.' its a cat. but this cat has got claws!

Re: Does your Coupe feel fast? - 07/04/2009 09:10

thats how i would describe it :-) i only have a stage one coop and standard suspension and uprated discs and pads so its not the meanest coupe out there.
i am sure if i went in nigels/flea's or johns's car i would feel slightly different.
