Top Gear 1997 Coupe vs review - 12/01/2009 11:59

I've just found this old Top Gear article. They also have some new numbers for the coop that are very similar to those reported by Autocar.

It features the 20vT vs
Alfa GTV 2.0 (pre V6 i assume),
Prelude Vtec,
S14 200SX

I've just thought of another Article I found a while back and didn't link on here. It's Top Gears coupe comparison featuring the S14 200Sx, Prelude Ctec, Corrado V6 and the 16vT.

Nice one Trappy. I have owned a 200SX s14, and an Alfa GTV as well as my 2 coupe's so that was double interesting for me.

You mean in a straight line race or a proper road test comparison?

For pure grunt, my calculations show that the CTR (2001) would pull 1 length out of the 16vT from 40-100mph. Nothing in it. from there it would remain the same up to 120mph.

They are pretty much neck and neck on the straights. \:\/

That's one I don't have numbers for \:\) All i've got is a conservative 15.6 1/4. I'll have a look around adn see what ther eis but don't expect it to be too impressive; it's only a 150bhp Mx5 engine afterall...

This car is proving to be a real pain in the proverbial. I'm seeing numbers of 165bhp and 180 (even a 210bhp version) but no references to magazine road tests to confirm? We did have them over here didn't we? I'm sure they weren't all imports?

Re: Top Gear 1997 Coupe vs review - 13/01/2009 14:23

The 323 gtr's are all imports.

1.8 4wd 210bhp.

Pretty rare cars....

My friend had one, I really liked it[not as much as my coupe] but they are a great car

Re: Top Gear 1997 Coupe vs review - 13/01/2009 19:06

My dad used to have a Type R civic. My 16VT would have murdered it in a straight line.

The 16VT I had had some mods but I am sure a standard one would be quite a bit quicker too.

I remember being unimpressed with my dads Civic, even when you drive it at high revs like it is supposed to be driven, it seemed all noise and not a lot of go.

The coupe just throws you forwards with loads of torque in comparison.

Re: Top Gear 1997 Coupe vs review - 13/01/2009 23:55

civic type r is brilliant car...for a non turbo!
how you think the 16vt would do against the 20vt?
and what about against scooby[uk215b.h.p]

I really can't see it. The only numbers for a 16vT I've seen are in one of the links above and, putting in those times, it most definately isn't substancially quicker than a 2001 CTR, if at all. They weigh about the same and have pretty much the same power. The coop's low down torque advantage counts for nothing in the upper reaches of both cars rev bands.

I accept that it may feel faster and possibly even be a little faster in the real world where you can find yourself out of the engines sweet spot, but a straight line drag race would result in a draw.

Is the 0-100mph time right for the 20vt? Seems very quick.

14.7? Autocar recorded a 14.5 in the 1996 Road Test and then a 15 in the 2000 0-100-0mph Test.

Full data;
Autocar
0-30mph: 2.5
0-40mph: 3.5
0-50mph: 4.8
0-60mph: 6
0-70mph: 7.9
0-80mph: 9.9
0-90mph: 11.9
0-100mph: 14.5
0-110mph: 18.3
0-120mph: 22.3
0-130mph: 29.2

Top Gear
0-30mph: 2.5
0-40mph: 3.3
0-50mph: 4.9
0-60mph: 6.1
0-70mph: 8.5
0-80mph: 10.2
0-90mph: 12.2
0-100mph: 14.7
0-110mph: 18.8
0-120mph: 22.7
0-130mph: 27.6

I'm not sure what to make of the conflicting 0-130mph times. Which is a typo?

They can be found by following the link in the second post!

Open it yourself you laxy sod \:P

Ok, here are the Top Gear numbers for the 16vT. I don't have Autocars data... I'll have a look around \:\)
0-30mph: 2.7
0-40mph: 3.9
0-50mph: 5.2
0-60mph: 6.8
0-70mph: 9.0
0-80mph: 11.3
0-90mph: 14.1
0-100mph: 17.9
0-110mph: 22.2
0-120mph: 28.4
0-400m: 15.3
0-400m Terminal 93.1
0-1000m: 27.8
0-1000m Terminal 119.0

The distance and terminals are my calculated numbers based on the increment data.

Edit: Autocar has the 16vT the same up to the 1/4 mile but slightly slower afertwards, They reported;
0-100mph: 18.3
0-1000m: 28s
0-1000m terminal: 116mph

diliberate mistake, its a hanging offence to use txt (text) speak on this forum! atleast it shows the average age of a coupe driver is not 18

Couple of years back, I comfortably ( literally, leather armchairs \:P ) kept up with a civic type R that my mate owned from new .. in a 528 ( Auto, 160k on the clock ) \:D

So hopefully that was a driver thing and not a picture of how competent the C-T-R is on an A road. Soul-less little fizzbox if ever there was one .

Not quite. A limited number of 1.6 earlier variants were sold here as homolgation specials They are also technically referred to as GTRs though wear no badges. I know because I had one. It had full bash plates underneath. I chipped mine put water injection in, K and n filter, hybrid turbo, 3" stainless steel exhaust. It had a private plate G44 MMA- and I blew the head apart. It then got nicked. \:\( was fun while it lasted!

disagree about the soulless thing..i love the banshee scream of that vtec as it comes on cam, and the cars almost nervous, pointy handling on back roads makes it a hoot.....
