Drive shaft seals - 23/01/2013 13:47

Please can someone give me the numbers to quote for drive shaft seals. Motor factors seem to want dimensions etc etc and I don't have any to give. I can't get to a dealer as I don't have a car to use for teh rest of teh week.

Am doing my clutch on Saturday and dont want any leaks as a result.
Thank you

OMG - Fiat have just raped me.

£35.55 for the OSF - Talked my way into trade discount so 10% off.
No one stocks the NSF - What do you usually do John? Think I might liquid gasket around the rubber.

I have loads of NSF seals.
Tbh its only the visco o-ring that leaks .

Replace that and apply grease to help installation.
Then clean it off and apply a bead of rtv silicone around the outside.
Works every time.

Is that what I've bought the visco o ring? Or do I need to get something else??
I'll get some silicone!

No you've purchased the diff seals.

Visco oring is a small oring seal that fits over the shaft

If anything that's what will leak.its rare for a diff seal to leak generally speaking.
But if any do leak it will be the Osf diff seal
When you remove the shaft usually the seal is either missing or In two halves.

OK - So can I just buy a set of random O rings in a bag that go up to the correct size??

Yep! but try and match the width as well as size/diameter. As John said apply grease or oil on the shaft/o-ring before install and you should be good.

Re: Drive shaft seals - 24/01/2013 15:41

Cool - These'll be about the same diameter as the internal on the diff seal?
Hunt the part - part 2 then!

What size roughly are the o rings??

Re: Drive shaft seals - 24/01/2013 21:56

that sounds about right, cross section of the seal measured about 45 mm on a shabby plastic rule.
Thanks, id hate to have a leak after doing all this work!!

A reply to an old post for further reference. Since I can't reply to the how to:
https://www.fiatcoupeclub.org/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=202386

The O-ring on the short drive shaft / visco o- ring has OEM nr 14457881

In case it can't be ordered anymore I measured a spare new original.
Inside diameter is 25 mm, thickness diameter is 2,6 mm. Material has to be oil resistant, so e.g. Viton and not made of rubber.

The closest I could order of a general aftermarket brand without ordering large amounts is:
https://www.autodoc.nl/dt/9467018
I compared the two. As can can be seen in the specification, the after market ring is slightly larger and slightly thinner than the original.
It is supposed to be for an MAN gearbox, so probably oil resistant.

I did not try the alternative, so no guarantees
