Noisy clattering engine - 15/04/2019 17:16
Having finally got my 20VT fixed, MOT't taxed and insured etc my first run for a while ended up with a noisy clattering sound after around 20 minutes.
Sounds like its the engine or the valve gear but not sure. No loss of power or performance but obviously I'm not wanting to drive it any further.
Turbo is new, clutch is new, nothing has been done to the engine so very puzzling as I'm told they are bullet proof.
Any ideas anyone?

Check the oil - at least twice....
If the oil is too low, the hydraulic tappets struggle to fill and the engine will sound clattery

In addition to above, does the cabin smell of burning oil, is the oil pressure gauge normal at idle and is the coolant temp running hotter than normal? If so, all signs of low oil level

Full oil pressure on cold idle and when running warm. Pressure drops a bit on warm idle. Oil was low but not below minimum. Engine temp normal and no oil smells. Balance of opinion seems to be hydraulic valce lifters so many thanks everyone I'll get it checked out by my local Italian car specialist.

Agreed - that sound like a failed big end bearing, which means the crank is probably dead
The best you can hope for is that a cam lobe is badly worn and is slapping the hydraulic tappet, but I really don’t think the sound is right for a top-end clatter
I have a good engine in stock, but I’m waiting to hear from another owner with a dead engine whether she wants it

OK Nigel please let me know. I'll need to weigh up the cost of replacing the engine or having spent a fair bit already offering the car as is to the Fiat Coupe Club community.
