Fiat 20V Turbo Plus Yr 2000

The turbo has given up on me, so I would like some advice on the best course of action. I plan to replace it myself using the handy guide on the forum. My questions are:

is it possible to simply keep the original turbo, but just replace the internals?
Is it better to refurbish the whole turbo on an exchange basis.
is it better to simply fit a brand new turbo.

I am suspecting that the cost rises between the first and third options, so interested in whether any of the options are a 'false economy'.

Finally, who are the recommended stockists for replacement turbos- I've not dealt with turbo suppliers previously.

Any advice gratefully received.

Second option is the best balance between cost and reliability

I would never rebuild a turbo DIY - the balancing is critical

No need to buy new when a recon turbo is just as good

The only other option is a known-good secondhand unit

You used to be able to buy just the core. There were a couple of stockists on ebay selling between £120 and £160.

It's a bit labour intensive as you have to strip your compressor and turbine housings from your old turbo. But if you're handy with the spanners it can be a cost effective option.
