Turbo rebuild

Hi all,

So the coupes off the road atm, one of them typical coupe things tbf of - right MOT has expired, lets do the oil cooler over winter why its hibernating... - oh look the standard manifolds cracked, guess im doing that too... and so on!

Now my thought is why the cars in pieces and all thats holding the turbo on atm is the hoses - maybe i should just send it away to have new seals etc as if there not dodgy already - they will be soon (car is on about 96k i think).

Anyone had it done? - Recommendations? approx price?

I used to work for a company in Northampton and one of the guys there was a car enthusiast, he’d had his turbo checked by a local company called turbotechnics. There are a number, and you might want to consider a minor upgrade at the same time, but service, repair or exchange seem to be your options. Do please check which services are available:

I contacted a company called Turbo rebuild - the mailed back quickly and said a rebuild with new bearings and seals was £175 + VAT - obviously any parts required would be extra.

Anyone got any experience with any of the above?

I don't know your objectives, but are you sure a rebuild is even necessary? Did you get blue smoke from the exhaust at times, etc.

When I was heavily involved with puntosports, Midland Turbo had a good reputation with some of the long time members, but I've no personal experience. That's not to say others aren't worth checking out.

Do be aware that the quote could easily be doubled by the time you get the invoice though.

I would be inclined to take peoples advise on the well known companies. No help to anyone but when I had my turbo done a local specialist took care of things.

The main objective is to not have the turbo fail when its eventually back on the road!

The cars done about 95k i think it is, its currently in pieces having a manifold and oil cooler/pipes done so my thought was its much easier for the turbo come off and have new seals etc now that it will be when its back together. Once of twice i noticed if it sat idling for a while, when i pulled off i'd get a puff of blue smoke, never constant or often so it could be stem seals as easy as turbo seals.

Basically i'm hoping get it back together in the next few weeks/months - then off to FCSS or Midlandscarservicing to have some welding/underneath work done - when it comes back a (hopefully) rust free car covered in a tatty bodyshell i'd like to think that I can get some use of it pre paint - being a coupe, and knowing my luck, what will happen is i'll get it back and have a smokey turbo so the thought is why its easy to remove...refresh it.

If your taking it to fcss / midlands why not put off swapping over the turbo and let them look it over and make a call on it?

They can give you an experienced view point on if it needs doing or not. And talk to you about turbo options if your keeping it standard, or looking for a modest improvement turbo.

No point spending money if your not sure you need to.

Ive just been through a similar process - my car has done just over 100k. I spoke to a number of companies (including those mentioned) and eventually went with Turbo Technics - I was swayed by two factors: they are a highly regarded and known supplier - particularly with Fords. Also they provide a 2 year warranty and 'price matched' all other suppliers.

They stripped the turbo and then rang me with a very detailed evaluation. They were honest enough to state it was not that baldly worn and could last a few more years if I wanted to bolt it straight back on. However, as it would need doing at some stage in the future, I took the plunge and got it fully rebuilt. Took about a week and has been returned looking like new. Cost was £240+VAT.
